I don't think anyone credible was going to take this job with Jay in year 4 of a 5 year contract with Dan Snyder as the owner.
If I'm Kirk why would I sign for 5 or 6 years if I don't know if Jay is going to be here or not. Kyle and McVay are gone. Those are 2 of the 3 people Kirk actually trust.
Dan and Scot are going to have to decide whether they want Jay here long term. Until then, this team is in a holding pattern and may not be that attractive to potential DC's and Kirk.

Gruden didn't help his cause by hiring Manusky...that is for sure. Pettine was the obvious choice and he missed on that.
The problem is that Gruden is not a bad coach but he has made awful decisions at DC. SM handicapped him by neglecting the defense and not addressing glaring needs.
If we lose Kirk, we will take multiple steps back. He is the only reason we were decent this year. We had no running game and no defense. This season was all on Kirk and he did well. If our kicker could have hit a simple FG in London, we would have made the playoffs in spite of the opposition we faced.
Good QBs don't grow up on trees like most of you think.
Bright side, he knows the players we have and hopefully has identified what he needs to fix this defense.
Dark side... another year of the 3-4 defense in DC.
Twist side... means that they are likely going to go heavy and hard on the defense this year..
That's exactly why he was chosen. However we make the same mistake over again. We had better choices but once again we make the wrong decision.
Thats assuming Pettine actually wanted the job. I know most of us normal folks wont interview for a job we didnt actually want, but then I also know people that will occasionally take an interview for a job they have no intention of taking just to keep their interview skills sharp. Not to mention hi interviewing with us keeps his name floating out there.
As I said in another post... I dont think we really had better choices. NO one was going to take this gig knowing Gruden might actually get fired after next season. Greg is already hear. You dont move your family to take what could amount to a one year contracting gig.
Edit: By not really having better choices. Yes there were possibly better coaches available. But I dont think any of them actually WANTED this job.

So Jay Gruden is throwing next season away so he can sign his buddy Paul Guenther after next season he should be fired now with that thinking
