Earlier in the week Cooley called this. Pretty much said they wanted a place holder for Guenther. That's Jay's boy and the guy he really wanted. Hoping Marvin flames out again and they can go get Guenther next year. In the meantime if Greg kills it.....cool.

Like I said 2 weeks ago, we are in a clown car going over a cliff. Several of us were told "not to panic" and Skinsdad said "we would get somebody good".

Sorry Skinsdad and other friends, I am not attacking you but you were wrong and I told you. Manusky will be a disaster and has done nothing of note in his career. This is his 4th time as a DC with his previous 3 times being a train wreck. Why in heaven's name did we hire him?

This should cost Gruden his job. This is his 3rd terrible DC choice and he is clearly NOT learning from his mistakes. Its troubling enough that our best candidates picked the Rams and Chargers ahead of us, but now we go dumpster diving and pick a proven loser.

Like I said several times, this whole process was a disaster and never had much structure to it at all. I am not sure where to place all of the blame BUT if it was Gruden's choice, then he should be shown the door next year if we don't make the playoffs. This is just unacceptable and I see little improvement over last years defense. Truth be told, I think improvement will be made due to the talent increase only.

I don't think anyone credible was going to take this job with Jay in year 4 of a 5 year contract with Dan Snyder as the owner.

If I'm Kirk why would I sign for 5 or 6 years if I don't know if Jay is going to be here or not. Kyle and McVay are gone. Those are 2 of the 3 people Kirk actually trust.

Dan and Scot are going to have to decide whether they want Jay here long term. Until then, this team is in a holding pattern and may not be that attractive to potential DC's and Kirk.

The problem is that Gruden is not a bad coach but he has made awful decisions at DC. SM handicapped him by neglecting the defense and not addressing glaring needs.

If we lose Kirk, we will take multiple steps back. He is the only reason we were decent this year. We had no running game and no defense. This season was all on Kirk and he did well. If our kicker could have hit a simple FG in London, we would have made the playoffs in spite of the opposition we faced.

Good QBs don't grow up on trees like most of you think.

Gruden didn't help his cause by hiring Manusky...that is for sure. Pettine was the obvious choice and he missed on that.

Bright side, he knows the players we have and hopefully has identified what he needs to fix this defense.

Dark side... another year of the 3-4 defense in DC.

Twist side... means that they are likely going to go heavy and hard on the defense this year..

Thats assuming Pettine actually wanted the job. I know most of us normal folks wont interview for a job we didnt actually want, but then I also know people that will occasionally take an interview for a job they have no intention of taking just to keep their interview skills sharp. Not to mention hi interviewing with us keeps his name floating out there.

I agree with everything you said. Jay hiring Joe Barry was soft and an insecure move. He's still holding out for his boy Guenther instead of going and getting a legit DC.

That's exactly why he was chosen. However we make the same mistake over again. We had better choices but once again we make the wrong decision.

As I said in another post... I dont think we really had better choices. NO one was going to take this gig knowing Gruden might actually get fired after next season. Greg is already hear. You dont move your family to take what could amount to a one year contracting gig.

Edit: By not really having better choices. Yes there were possibly better coaches available. But I dont think any of them actually WANTED this job.

I hear you Shark but I don't believe that is the case. He was out of football all of last year and I doubt he would have interviewed unless he was interested. It is concerning that he hasn't interviewed anywhere else though. I think if they would have offered the job, he would have taken it unless he simply wants to sit out another year.

So Jay Gruden is throwing next season away so he can sign his buddy Paul Guenther after next season he should be fired now with that thinking

I think that is short-sided to say nobody wanted the job accept Manusky. I think Pagano or Thurmond would have taken it and I bet Phillips would have taken it had we moved earlier in the process. Screw McVay and I hope he falls on his face!

Ease up boss. I seriously doubt Gruden is THROWING next season away. As the reality is, if the team doesnt improve Gruden might get fired. Thus place holding the job for his buddy makes no sense.

Manusky’s units have, on average, ranked 18th in total defense and 17th in points allowed. During his stint with the Colts, Manusky’s defenses struggled in all four seasons. Indianapolis never cracked the top 10 in total defense and only did so once in points allowed, finishing ninth in 2013. Manusky was fired after the 2015 season when the Colts ranked 26th in total defense and 25th in points allowed.
