My initial reaction is that this is a great draft, obviously we will have to wait to ultimately find out. Dallas did a great job supplementing the roster with talent at much needed positions. Gregory is an excellent value at #60 -- I don't know how he made it that far! Byron Jones has all the tools, let's see if they can coach him up. Chaz Green and Damien Wilson should turn into good depth in time. I don't know what to think about the guys in rounds 5 & 7 but I like the positions they chose. Really wanted that RB though...

All in all, I give it a solid A.

Does Gregory start out at SLB?

Is Jones a CB or S?

wouldnt be too good against the run. Mincey starts IMO. Once Hardy is back its him and Mincey if I'm guessing. They will all rotate though so doesn't matter who starts.

The Cowboys draft was good but not great. I give them a B-.

Gregory only weighs 220 lbs soaking wet. They better move him around on defense.

How much bulk do you think the Boys can put on him? Charles Haley was 255, I know 35 pounds is a lot of weight but He was about as disruptive as you could get as a DE.

Coach Rod may have different plans for him and place him in some scheme where he is used more like a LB? <<<---That is an Honest question.

I can't downgrade a draft that's all defense and OL. I think it's possible the 4 RB's they have on the roster can provide a solid running game. If they can, this could be a much improved football team next season

Initially, while Hardy is suspended, I expect Mincey to start with Lawrence at the two DE spots. I think we may see Gregory at SLB on early downs in base 4-3 to start out. Gregory is too light in the ass to play DE on running downs. On passing downs I can see Mincey sliding inside in place of Hayden, and Gregory will slide down to the RDE. Or we may only see Gregory on passing downs this year.

When Hardy comes back from suspension, he will be the every down RDE. Lawrence will be the LDE and Mincey will be the third DE in the rotation. In this scenario I see Gregory most useful to Dallas as a SLB. Gregory seems athletic enough to play in space -- but I could be wrong -- and as the SLB we can use him in a lot of blitz packages. I don't think this team sees Hitchens as the every day SLB, although he is capable of playing there.

The real question for me is, does drafting Gregory make Hardy strictly a one year rental? And another question I have is, what does Dallas do with all these LB'ers we have?

I think we only see Gregory on passing downs this year. He'll of course play some run downs, but for the most part it will be to get the QB. But that's fine. That's why we drafted him.

I was thinking about the Hardy situation before the draft knowing we could get another DE. When Dallas signed him my guess was if he put up numbers they were going to find a way to resign him. I still think that is the case, but if both Lawrence and Gregory work out it will be more of a luxury. The concern is all 3 are better fits on the weak side. We lost two natural Strong side DEs and replaced them with 2 natural RDEs. Wonder how that effects our run defense. I'm guessing that's what they are hoping to get out of this kid from Purdue.

One thing is for sure, we have a few more bodies to throw into the mix. Let's see who earns the roster spots and the playing time. Even though we like to speculate about it on message boards, Marinelli isn't making out his lineup card today. Competition starts next weekend.

Can't see Gregory playing many snaps at SLB. Think he's more the 3rd down specialist starting out while Hitchens play keeps him on the field. Rod refers to his guys as "rushmen" and I think he's planning just that and banking on tackle machines' outta our LB's.

Way to early for a grade but I trust these guys and the direction they choose. I woulda still liked another addition to the dbackfield and a 5th round RB from this draft.....oh well

I'd be happy if he could HOLD 240/245 throughout the season

To be quite frank, Gregory is a LBer who was blessed with length and with it comes tools to succeed as a pass rusher. I'm not sure what all has been said about his ability to play in space as a Sam, but I've seen him flow to the ball in those cases. The offenses still had to account for him as a blitzer which should still be the case in NFL. McClain has to sit a few games as well as Hardy. I don't think we need to put Gregory on the line to get to the QB. Mincey will fill in for Hardy, and from time to time we can sneak Gregory onto the line. But I think we'd be better off using him as a LB with a designated blitzer role to start out this year. Once Hardy returns we should see less of Gregory off the edge unless we take Lawrence off the field for rest.

Tight set and shift the TE out to the slot. Who goes out with him? I can not see Gregory play SLB other than to pin his ears back at the snap.

That is the problem with Gregory playing LB on a regular basis. In our defense more than others he needs to be able to cover. He isn't starting at LB over Lee, McClain or Hitchens. My point for bringing it up the other day was to find ways to get him on the field a little. If he can do it I could see us letting McClain walk or as an injury replacement. But I'm not sure if he can cover at all. Was he ever asked to cover in College?

Definitely would be a cheaper option.

Best case scenario is we rotate him as a pass rusher And he puts on some weight for 2016. But if he is the type that just can't put weight on we are going to have to be a little creative with how we get him snaps. I love the idea of having 4 DEs that can rush the passer. I'm still looking for a bigger 1 tech to put in the rotation with some of these other guys too. Could use another 3 tech but not easy to find them. Think McClain plays a little of both.

Does the Jones pick put pressure on Carr and Scandrick? With Scandrick they can say, ok, sit out all you want we just drafted your replacement. And now Carr loses any leverage he may have had as well. If he gets cut he's probably not even making half of what he's making now (which is likely what they pay cut would be worth).

And hey, if Claiborne comes in and absolutely kills it in camp maybe we play Jones at safety?

The only thing clayburn will kill is the defense. The defense got way better after he went down.
