Just to put things in perspective:

Wideman made 4.5 million last year and got less than a 1 million dollar raise as a UFA after putting up some pretty good numbers last season. Do some of you guys actually think he would sign somewhere for 3 to 3.5 million a year?

Edit: #10 in points in the league for defensemen and #11 in goals

btw... I hope you know I would give you a rough time no matter who the Flames sign.
$25 mill is a big number to attach to Wideman, but he's a useful player, and a the very least a huge upgrade over Sarich for $1m more.

$5m is the new $3.5m.

Yeah I realize that and it's all good and JayBo is likely the poster child for overpayment. You're pretty much guaranteed to overpay in the free agent market though and especially in a year where the crop is thin. Based on all that, I'm ok (not thrilled, but ok) with this signing.

He'll be fine in Calgary as long has his defense partner is a stay at home defenseman.

I guess Feaster was just on Fan 960 radio and said he's prepared to go with a Top 4 defense corps of Giordano, Brodie, Wideman and wait for it...Bouwmeester.

Can we still get a #1 center, Mr. Feaster or do we have to wait for Jankowski?

For some reason Calgary refuses to rebuild. They've had solid seasons the past two years just missing the playoffs both times. It looks like Feaster is loading up for another similar season. I hope Kipper can continue to play 70 plus games to give them at least a shot at the playoffs. I really don't know why Feaster would waste any money on Comeau. That money should be spent elsewhere.

They prefer to re-tool than rebuild (I guess it wouldn't be considered a scorched earth re-build until Iggy and Kipper are traded). They won't trade Iggy unless he comes to management and says he wants out. I could see Kipper moved at next year's trade deadline if the Flames are struggling, though.

Retooling isn't going to get the Flames that #1 center they need. They're either going to have to rebuild or Feaster is going to have to find a way to acquire one.

Getzlaf
Zajac
Ribeiro

All will become UFA's after next season. Staal could be on that list, but he'll probably resign with Carolina. What are the chances any of them pick the Flames?

I wanted Zajac about three seasons ago, and his play in the recent playoff run with the Devils hasn't swayed me one bit. I would start rooting for the Canucks if Ribeiro became a member of the Flames. As for Getzloaf, too pricey and full of himself these days.

He sucked in the 2nd half of the year though. He was top 5 for both before the ASB. There's a reason he was 2nd to last in Playoff +/- (and I know that doesn't always say everything about the way someone is playing). At best he is an offensive defenseman who is bad in his own end and at worst he is a PP specialist, who is really bad in his own end.

Wideman bought into Hunter's system though didn't he? From what I saw during the playoffs everyone on the team did.

Now that's a ringing endorsement if we ever saw one. OUCH!!:D:

I should say though that his first half was pretty darn good though. With Mike Green out he really stepped it up. But obviously the last thing you see from someone gets stuck in your head and you remember it a lot more easily than the prior stuff.

ritari, I have similar concerns about Wideman's play in the 2nd half of the season/playoffs, but John Weisbrod (assistant to Feaster) had Wideman in Boston and hopefully he can rekindle some of that magic in Calgary.

No, but I thought he'd only get low 4ish. He had a good offensive year, but I'd be lying if I said he didn't have a lot of routine passes turn into secondary assists b/c of the guys he was playing with. He definitely has some offensive skill and is smooth with the puck, but he was our worst defenseman in the playoffs. At times, he makes Mike Green look like Nicklas Lidstrom.

I'd say he may help your PP in Calgary. If that is a big need, then he should help, but his deficiencies elsewhere are problematic.

mais bien sur...

@Fan960Steinberg: Wideman has a full no movement clause.

Maybe he'll play better defense standing still? ;)

Here's a pretty funny summary of last year's season from RMNB. My favorite part was "Alignment - Netural Evil." hahaha.

PS - Sorry, Dasher. I really wish I had better things to say about him, but his play late in the season was particularly disappointing since he was in the 3rd D pair and was asked to play against the other teams 3rd and 4th lines. That makes the number of goals he and his linemate gave up particularly bothersome. But maybe he can return to his early season form when he was a high-octane defenseman who was at least mediocre on D.

I appreciate the info on Wideman, ritari and eloco from guys who have seen quite a bit of him. I'm gonna stay optimistic on this signing and hope for the best.

Somebody on HF referred to him as " ennis Wi eman" because he had no D. That's kinda funny.

@camcharron: Part of Dennis Wideman's deal states that he doesn't have to put the cap back on the toothpaste when the team is on a road trip.
