It is amazing that the article makes the same points I have made countless times and even on this forum. The PED hysteria as he succinctly points out stems from the intense hatred of Barry Bonds. Were McGwire the one who held the home run records for single season and all time, steroids would not have been hyped into a cult status by these holier than thou hypocrites in the media. It was only when Barry Bonds was roped in before these hypocrites made steroids into a cult status and the sycophantic fans who keep silent when a player on their team is caught started to run away with it.

Yeah, it's all about Barry Bonds. :rolleyes2: If anyone "intensely hates" Barry Bonds it's because he's an asshole.

Bingo Bingo Bingo

The steroid police, fans included are all hypocrites. I remember the love fest of 1998.

So Bonds was busted? Link?

So Bonds was clean?

tatum_channing_laughing_hysterically-1508.gif

Listen dude, even Lance Cheatstrong isn't sanctimonious enough to play the "never failed a drug test" bullshit anymore. Albert Pujols is the only one still doing that.

Get over Barry Bonds. Everyone else has.

Very good answer, but he was forced to retire before his time and retired only because he didn't want to answer the tough questions

Not true. He told every single MLB team he'd play for free just to play.

Wrong!

YOU need to over get Barry Bonds. He is the MLB single season and career HR leader. He has never been sanctioned or disciplined by MLB EVER, therefore all his records are legit.

Live with it.

and dispute anything that I wrote.

BTW, for a moderator, you are exceptionally rude. Shouldn't you set the example?

There's no doubt he's an asshole. That's why no one was offended by the rampant steroid use in baseball until Barry Bonds started doing it and tearing apart the record books. It's abundantly obvious that's what happened. If Albert Belle had been part of a big PED scandal and was shattering records, *HE* would have been the guy who set it off. Bonds' personality is the spark that lit the fire. McGwire and Sosa were destroying records, but they gave interviews and smiled all the time, so it was okay.

Listen, I'm not a fan of Barry Bonds or the Giants. It's just obvious that no one cared about steroids until this ornery guy who the media hated started turning MLB into a video game.

It's an ok article but ... meh. I agree with the author that ARod's proposed punishment is insane but the idea that we care about PED use b/c it affects "childhood heroes" is lazy and untrue. I'm a Twins fan. Baseball's playing field hasn't ever been level - the Yankees, esp in the 2000s, could easily triple the Twins payroll but that was ok per MLB. But then the Yankees knock the Twins out of the playoffs behind great performances by PED users like Giambi, ARod, Clemens, Pettitte etc. The Twins best playes - Radke, Hunter, Santana, Koskie weren't PED users but the best players on the teams that beat them in the playoffs were. That pisses me off to no end. I don't care about PED use in football b/c I'm pretty confident that the Vikings are taking as much PEDs as the Giants or the Cowboys. It's a level playing field there. But in baseball, teams that used PEDs more than other teams had significant advantages over other teams. And that, in my view, was the real problem with the PED era.

Wow. This is an atrocious post on so many levels. Let me get you a tissue.

Carl Pohlad's fortune dwarfed the Steinbrenners', and the Twins have always had great and dedicated fans who show up to games. Don't give me this bullshit that the playing field wasn't level. The Twins could have spent way more money than they did, but Pohlad ran the team as a business investment and cared only about his profit margins. If he put more of that money into the team rather than into his pocket, they could have signed those key free agents they needed during those prime years in the 00s, just like they did in 1987 and 1991. A NY team is certainly going to always have more spending money than a MN team, but money doesn't guarantee anything. Remember, Pohlad tried to FOLD THE FUCKING TEAM so that the other owners would pay him a contraction fee, and to leverage the city to pony up for a new stadium. Just look at how much better they've gotten with their money since that piece of shit died and his son took over. Tried to fold a team that competed every year and had good attendance. Just to make a few million bucks.

And are you FUCKING KIDDING ME with this "teams that used more PEDs" bullshit? How do you know? How do you know Radke or Santana never used? Corey Koskie? Went from 9 HR to 26 HR in one season. Don't people usually use huge jumps in HR as evidence of PED use? Didn't Ortiz come up through the Twins' system? Maybe he taught them all how to inject. Use was rampant throughout the league and throughout all teams. No one team had decidedly more than another. Hell, the 1987 Twins team was the first time I remember people whispering about steroids in baseball, with the massive jump in HR power by Gaetti and Puckett. So get lost with that bullshit.

Don't blame money and PEDs for the fact the Twins never got far in the postseason. Terry Ryan deserves to have a statue built for him considering that he always kept them competitive despite being given no budget by Scrooge McDuck. Some years, they just didn't have enough talent and were lucky to get to the postseason, and other seasons, things just didn't break right for them. It happens.

The Twins are probably my 3rd favorite team. I've always had a deep respect for the way they run their organization, and my college roommate was from Eden Prairie. But I can't stand whiney, holier than thou crap like this. You were sold a bill of goods by an owner who wanted to pocket as much money as he could and point the finger at others when the team didn't get it done.

Pohlad was a piece of shit. He's hated in MN. But not many owners are willing to lose money - even the Yanks. Suggesting that an owner lose money to compete isn't a realistic answer. The Yankees, simply by being in the biggest market, have resources other teams don't. The NFL has worked hard to prevent that and level the playing field so Green Bay can win a superbowl. MLB embraces it.

If you want to believe PEDs didn't affect play or if you want to believe that everyteam had equal access to PEDs and used them as frequently, go right ahead. It says more about you than it does the era. I suppose it helps to think that way for certain fans. I don't particularly care. The author of the story you linked suggested that PED use was a child hood hero issue and wondered why no one gave a crap about PED use in the NFL. I found that lazy and untrue and expressed reasons most of the people I know hate the steroid era and why it was bad for baseball.

Your defense of Barry Bonds as clean as a whistle is truly the most laughable nonsense I've read since I've joined this forum.

No one ever suggested Pohlad lose money, just make less profit. If you think he was ever at risk of losing money, then I once again have to suggest you were sold a bill of goods.

The NFL doesn't give a shit about a level playing field. Their #1 priority is maximizing profits for the owners and forcibly keeping player salaries down. Their current system allows them to maximize profits.

I also never even mildly suggested PEDs didn't affect play. And in what way did all teams not have equal access to PEDs? It says more about me? What does it say about me? Can you clarify that?

Hello Straw Man

I never said that. But IMO, we can't lump Barry in with those who were actually caught by MLB, since testing began. Barry was never caught or sanctioned by MLB.

Now obviously, you aren't capable of a discussion, so just belittle the posters. I'll stand by my assertion that as a moderator, it sends a bad example.
