How so? The league makes 10 billion in revenue a year and is significantly higher markup than most. Probably 30% of that is profit.

He makes less than twice the highest paid players.

He got what, 15mill more by there not being a lockout in 2012? (He got approximately 30 in 2011 and just 11mill in 2010.). No idea of the specifics, but.... The NFL is making a lot more for all parties involved under Rog than it did Paul. It's making a lot more now than it did earlier in Goodell's tenure.

There some good stuff in here about Goodell working out big TV contracts. I think anyone could have swung that. The NFL sells itself. What about everything else? If you think this won't create friction with the players union you're nuts.

Tha Insighter Archives. Roger Goodell vs. Paul Tagliabue. « Tha Sports Junkies 101

61 percent of the players in the NFL said they disapprove of the job Goodell has done since succeeding Paul Tagliabue in September of 2006.

NFL offseason reported arrests are up significantly during Goodell’s tenure. Ironically, they’ve increased since Roger implemented the Personal Conduct Policy in 2007. The average number arrests during Tag’s reign were at 17.7, but under Goodell, that number has jumped to 28.5. That’s a 61-percent increase in NFL arrests – a major shift — during Goodell’s time in office.

The handling of player personnel goes to Tagliabue. People like to praise Goodell for running a tight ship, but the numbers speak otherwise. Also, there were no players’ strikes or lockouts during Tagliabue’s term, an accomplishment unmatched by any of the past or present commissioner(s). He made it a priority to develop a strong relationship with the players’ union.

It doesn't matter if there's friction. The players have no leverage and Goodell's earnings doesn't provide them any. The CBA is entirely down to leverage and that is all in the owner's court.

He's not a good commissioner IMO, but he doesn't work for the players and their opinion doesn't matter. The owners are clearly happy enough with him to pay him, and the players have no say or consideration in the matter.

It doesn't. The league and owners hold all the cards. The players have no leverage whatsoever. What they want doesn't matter.

I don't have any reply to this other than good luck with all that. The last thing any company needs is pissed off employees who do all the work and see the boss make all the big money.

They have no other place to go to make even 1% of what they make now. Goodell could make $10 mil a year elsewhere easy if he walked away tomorrow.

There was never even a strike under Tags.

True. But wasn't it on Tags watch that Upshaw, and the meat he represented, got that honey of a deal? Im guessing the screw job Goodell put to the union this time around made the owners happy. Not saying 45 mill isn't nuts money, but I can see why he got paid well.

pffft. CEOs are nothing but glorified cheerleaders. The fucking office manager does more to earn his pay then these chumps.

All this ridiculous "look at what other CEOs are making" crap is what started this buffoonery. Guys like Gates and Dell and a few others built their companies and deserve to make that much money. Idiots like Goodell and 99% of the CEOs out there who did nothing but inherit a position because someone liked them deserve nothing. Back in the day these types whined when they saw the innovators making this huge money and said WAAAAA! I manage a company of the same size and should make as much as they do. The great money grab of the 90s was born and nobody did anything to stop it because everyone was making money and no one wanted it to end. Cowards!

JDM,

If what they were reporting on the radio yesterday is true, the NFL didn't have just have 10 billion in revenue this past year. They had 10 billion in profits. So basically, every team in the NFL is getting roughly 325 million dollars, less operating cost and salary they pay out.

This doesn't include ticket sales, concessions, merchandise sales, etc. Basically if you want a license to print money -- buy an NFL team.

$44m? Jesus he would be right up there with some of the highest compensated CEOs.

I have no clue what exactly Goodell is responsible for in regards to the NFL's success, but when you are the head of business that is making a profit for 10 billion a year -- it seems you should be compensated more than the overwhelming majority of CEO's, as not many companies are making 10 billion a year.

I don't think they would've said or meant profit.

How The National Football League Can Reach $25 Billion In Annual Revenues - Forbes

This shows that the NFL was going to make just north of $9billion in revenue at the end of this year. Which is right along the lines of the reported $10billion they actually made in revenue.

JDM is just arguing to argue.

What? He's 100% right and is being pretty mild-mannered about it so far, too.

Looks like you're trolling just to troll to me. If you don't like the dude, that's fine, but don't follow him over here just to trash him when he's making compelling points about this situation.

I completely agree with him- this whole thing is no big deal. Goodell runs a business that is absolutely killing it financially, his salary is on par with that fiscal reality.

I think you're assuming the players didn't already know that the bosses make all the big money. What do you think the lock-out was all about? It was because the owners (a.k.a. the bosses) were being greedy and demanding an even bigger cut of the profits, even though each single owner was already raking in a higher share of said profit than all of the players on the team combined.

The players and their union are not naive, they know how much Goodel is and has been making, and they know it's all coming from the owners, so they have no control over it. This won't cause any new friction at all between the NFL front office and the players union, and there's really no reason it should.

The NFL, as a business entity made over $3 billion in net profit last year, and their "CEO" was paid accordingly. It's really just as simple as that.

What was it that the guy said in Iron Man when Tony Stark told him he had no family.

"You have everything & nothing"
