The SportsBusiness Journal reports NFL commissioner Roger Goodell earned $44.2 million in a 12-month period ending Mar. 31, 2013.

According to reporter Daniel Kaplan, the league's tax return will indicate Goodell was paid a $3.5 million salary and $40.36 million "bonus." Goodell's absurd bonus is more than the vast majority of NFL players earn in a lifetime, and easily makes him the highest-paid commissioner in North American sports. It's not a good look for a league that literally identifies itself as "not-for-profit" for tax purposes. We'd expect the commish's gargantuan salary to be dialed back for the next fiscal year.

The most interesting thing about this is, non-profit? These cocksuckers aren't paying taxes? No wonder the country is going belly up. Please someone correct me if I am wrong here.

Shit I came in just around 44.15 million shy of that. I think I qualify for non-profit, in the sense that I keep none of it.

Do you expect him not to make money?

Not for profit only applies to the actual league, not the teams. The league as an entity exists to make contractual things easier and pay employees, and all revenues go back to the teams, who are taxed on profits as they should be. That's my understanding of the role of the actual league as an entity.

Yeah I read into it, it doesn't get taxed on the way in. Just when it reaches it's final destination. That way they are not double taxed, no problem with that. Goodell can make all he wants, just say you are making 44 million this year. Don't be a puss and say you are making 3.5 and "slide in" a 40 million dollar bonus lol.

I would assume the bonus is based on some specific qualifications, and that if he tanked something awful he'd get little to none of it.

Generally the "guy at the top" doesn't make it difficult for themselves to receive bonuses. It's just a bit of an eyebrow raiser when 80% of one's salary is a bonus.

It makes more sense to me. If the league happened to fold he deserves none of it.

So this answers the questions "Where is all that money going?" everytime Goodell fines a player. The players suing the NFL for letting them play in NFL get the chunk of it. Whats left over obviously goes to Roger. Someone needs to investigate this dude.

So because the NFL is still in business he gets 40 million? I'm not following.

This isn't the XFL. The league isn't gonna magically up and fold one day. Atleast not a day anytime soon. And when it does, I doubt 'ol Roger will be the commish.

45 million is perfectly justified for leading a multibillion dollar league. I'm saying structuring it as a bonus means that poor performance can at least theoretically be rectified. If it's salary it can't be.

Also, the fines go to charity. They don't go to the league.

Dude, Tagliabue made less than 10 million in 2005.

So? Just because someone else (a great commissioner for the record) took substantially below market value for his services doesn't mean that's the standard to judge him on.

If the past NFL commissioner isn't a good barometer for the current one, then who is?

Combined the NFL teams are worth almost 40 billion. Compare him to CEO's of companies in that area.

Are you trying to tell me the NFL is the most popular sport in America? I think it's always been that way, long before Roger came along.

No, I'm trying to say when you are in charge of a business that handles nearly $10 billion in revenue annually, you're going to get paid.

Still too much. All this is going to do is freak out all the players and cause all kinds of problems with the players unions. In the end, it's going to cause the NFL to raise the salary cap and for owners to pay WAY more for players than they do now. Gonna get ugly.

The NFL is not one man. Goodell could croak tomorrow and the NFL would still continue to grow without him.

No, it won't. The CBA is locked in for 10 years and anyone with any say in the players association knows better to think mentioning Goodell's salary is anything resembling leverage. They have nothing and the owners know they have nothing to be afraid of. Do you think his salary isn't controlled by the owners in the first place? That they don't know?
