GMs, coaches do it all the time to players, so I don't have a big issue with it, but reporters who run with stuff like this from unnamed sources are just out for clicks imo.

IDK if it was personal, but playing your QB1 in a meaningless game behind a LT who is not going to make your team is borderline stupid.

True most of the garbage out there in internetland. But there are still some credible media outlets that require a reporter to disclose their source to the editor, but use 'anonymous' in the print. If it's on one of the major outlets, someone probably said it, but it's probably taken well out of context.

The reporter is talking directly to a NFL player or exec or agent or whatever, and the guy says, 'here's what I know, but I won't go on the record...'

If that reporter has a history with that source and they've been good (right) in the past, then you don't 'out' them, or you pretty soon won't have any sources.
