I just tell myself that the Giants don't want anyone thinking that they retired the number for Jack, considering how much he whined about hating Candlestick and moped his way out of town.

I know it's not accurate, but until I get a better answer, that's what I am going to continue to believe.

for those not old enough to remember Jack the Ripper, he was the first million-dollar Giant and when he was on, he was as deadly with the bat as anyone in the game at the time. But when he didn't hit, he was not a great teammate.

His public feud with Frank Robinson and his constant bitching about the conditions at Candlestick got him shipped out of town.
