Because they suck at stopping the run. They give up 127.1 yards a game. 25th in the league. Their DTs are nothing special and their LBs are a friggin joke.

I hope that they can exploit that, but they are 6 and 2 for a reason; they are a pretty good team.

This is interesting, the base defense that New York is running is a "BIG Nickel" with 3 safeties, hopefully they keep that up against the 49ers.. running against that sounds easier in theory, than running against a 3 linebacker set.

COSELL: Its funny you say that, because if you want to talk real football now, what the Giants have been doing is they play essentially with three safeties in what they call their big nickel. Its five defensive backs and three safeties. Thats often their base defensive package, and Im going to be very anxious to see if they stay with that because of what the 49ers do. A lot of two tight ends. Sometimes six offensive linemen. Sometimes Sopoaga in the game as a blocker. This is a team that plays a lot of big people. So, Im anxious to see if the Giants stay with whats essentially a nickel defense concept against that. If they do, that might be advantage 49ers in the run game.

Q: So its the Giants D with their three safeties against the Niners excellent run game, and Eli Manning and Hakeem Nicks testing the Niners nickel defense. Are those the key matchups?

COSELL: Yes, these are things Ill be looking at. I think the 49ers, and again, we say this every week, but the running game is absolutely critical for them. If they cant run it, theyre going to have a tough time against this Giants defense because the one thing about this D-line is they rush the quarterback really well. If you put Alex Smith in too many third and sevens, eights, nines, it wont be Alex Smith necessarily, it will be the O-line that may not be able to hold up against that pass rush.

Well, this sounds like the Giants play to some of the 49ers strengths. Putting out three safeties which should weaken their rushing defense, and maybe a lot of three wide receiver sets which will put Aldon Smith on the field more often than not.

i'm one of 'those' which is likely the "99%". not asking for a lot, just a few more each game. the run should've set up the pass already.

Well, this sounds like the Giants play to some of the 49ers strengths. Putting out three safeties which should weaken their rushing defense, and maybe a lot of three wide receiver sets which will put Aldon Smith on the field more often than not.

Giants will probably stay with the nickel in order to play our TEs in most formations? Probably a contingency to running looks to avoid getting beat by our bigs?(TEs, LTs, NTs...lol)

Skywalker is obviously Alex Smith handing off to Sopoaga who throws it all the way across the field (lateral) to Kaep who then airs it out deep to someone who drops it (Crabtree, Vernon Davis, or Braylon).

That sets up run up FB dive in same formation.
