Oh fuck the right off. They ended it like that? And those bastards film so slowly that it'll be another 2 years before season 3. Fuck all the way off
I agree

They might have killed this show.

Momentum will be murdered with how long they take to film.

Having the entire season essentially be set up is truly horrific creative decision.

it depends on how long they are on hiatus

I will watch next season regardless...but with the way this season dragged it feels like this should be a halfway point kind of break more than anything else.

I feel seriously let down by this season, the drop in writing quality is very noticeable. Also, it seems like they cut the season from 10 episodes to 8, resulting in an uneven season with no real final episode, it was all buildup, and now season 3 will start with the episodes that should have ended season 2.

This season has:

1. Sidelined probably the most interesting character, Daemon.
2. Made every female character lame.
3. Made Aemond, another interesting character, one-dimensional.

It's feeling like season 5 and 6 from GoT. Still some good stuff, but a lot bad decisions and bad writing. It was still an enjoyable season and I'm still looking fw to Season 3 with the hope that it is a better season.

I thought the writing was fine, maybe even a step up from the previous season. The pacing is the issue though. The cut from 10 to 8 hurt it for sure. But even then, I think they could have accomplished more stuff in 8 episodes by consolidating some stuff of what we were given to give a proper season arc. I won't go into spoilers for those that haven't read it but the battle this is leading to absolutely should have happened this season. And the final shot of the season should have been a certain someone victorious.

But now that's gonna get pushed to the first couple episodes for season 3 for sure. And with what all is left, I feel like they are gonna be rushing things to get thru it all in 2 seasons. One of the claims why the pace is slow the first two seasons is for budgetary reasons. Well, with what's left, there's a TON of action sequences that could strain those budgets. Without a lot of consolidation and rushing thru things, its a little hard to see right now how they could pull it off successfully without it feeling like GOT S8.

About three hours ago, George R. R. Martin posted on his blog criticizing this awful television adaptation.

He's actually really light in his criticism considering how the TV writers have butchered his book, but even then, the post was taken down within about an hour (he probably got an angry phone call from HBO), though you can still see it archived at the following links.

But, WARNING: THE POST HAS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SEASONS 3-4, so do not read if you do not want to be spoiled of what is coming in the future.

Edit/update: Okay, short summary of the post for those who want to know what's in the post without parts that spoil seasons 3-4:

- He's unhappy the TV writers toned down the Blood and Cheese scene and minimized its consequences.

- He's unhappy the TV writers eliminated the character of Aegon's other son Maelor because that means future events involving Maelor can't happen.

- Before season 2, he talked to the TV writers about their plans for the series. He argued against some changes they were making, and they indicated they would take his thoughts into consideration, but then they just ignored his recommendations.

- He calls the TV writers' upcoming changes in seasons 3 and 4 "toxic."

Author Xiran Zhao, who is George R. R. Martin's close friend, has added the following:

----

All right there has been some Discourse about George RR Martin because of that post he made going rogue on HOTD's writers (deleted a few hours later but archived) and I'm seeing some misinformed reactions by people who aren't in the publishing or entertainment industries so lemme clarify some things:

- Creators are not the ones with the power. Execs are. Even an author as big as George gets their opinions dismissed if the higher-ups don't want to listen.

- HBO has not listened to George's feedback and concerns for years. They do not have to, because once adaptation rights are signed away it is OUT of the author's hands. How do you think GOT Season 8 happened?

- George cannot just shut down production or refuse to let them make future seasons of any show inspired by his works because he doesn't like what they're doing. He can't break the contract willy-nilly either when HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS are at stake. I hope people keep that in mind before saying "oh why is he complaining while continuing to collect his royalty checks?" Well, if they're fucking up his stories he might as well get some money out of it.

- He's not complaining for complaining's sake. I hung out with him a few weeks ago and heard his full scope of opinions on HOTD and what he said in the post was VERY mild. Probably the least spicy storytelling critique he could've brought up. And I do believe this was on purpose and strategic. He's not going full scorched earth on HBO, but he's showing them that he COULD. He did this as a warning shot to get them to listen to him because clearly he saw some very upsetting plans for upcoming HOTD seasons. If he just wanted to complain there's way spicier shit he could've said.

- For those who think he's disrespecting the show's writers...How do you think he felt when they have dismissed his feedback in private and driven him to the point of risking legal action to make his point to them?

- Just because he didn't mention something in the post doesn't mean he approves of it or doesn't care, and the post should not be used to extrapolate his opinions on anything that's not related to what he specifically addressed. Again, what he said was VERY mild. Ultimately, what matters to him is logical storytelling and complex, morally gray characters.
