Slow start and Mason really needs to find his confidence, because he looked shaky at best. However, after the goalie change, we completely dominated the remainder of the game, especially the second period. The shots and chances were in our favor by an extremely wide margin and I thought the Islanders didn't even deserve a point in this one (let alone two), but they lucked out.
Giroux had a monster of a game, really. The huge primary assist on the Bellemare shorthanded goal, the game tying goal in the 3rd, 7 shots on goal altogether and 12 of 19 faceoffs won. You have to give Neuvirth a lot of credit for coming in cold and really stabilizing that position too, even though we had the puck in the offensive zone for most of the second period.
The power play continues to pretty much do whatever it wants with Voracek, Giroux, Gostisbehere, Simmonds and a pylon (if necessary) out on the ice. It's pretty spectacular to watch. They just aren't getting the payoff quite as often as you'd expect. Could you imagine if we had a true sniper in the slot for G to dish it to? Once Voracek gets rolling, that power play is going to be lethal.
I can't remember seeing such dominance for lengthy stretches out of a team that technically ended up "losing" the game in the end. So, to me, this is frustrating to only get one point, but also very encouraging for about 65%+ of the game. We deserved a much better fate, but we also need to quit chasing games. We are handling it better, but it's difficult to always give up a late period or early period goal and be trailing right away.
