Meh...I dont think TB is qu ite ready to compete. In 2 years they will definetly be contenders for some lower seedings but right now I think they are just squeeze-inable.

They're not particularly far away from competing again. And they still have a little bit of room to operate.

That's what I was thinking too. They need more help on the back end but Stevie Y has made a few nice move's IMO.

That's why so many teams were banging down Holmgren's door to acquire him right?? It doesn't matter whether he's worth the contract. What matters is what teams were willing to trade for him. Obviously, not much.

Whether or not he's worth the contract means a lot. He was hard to move because many teams ready to compete now don't have the cap room for him and teams that aren't yet ready to compete didn't want to mortgage their futures for a win-now player. There's also the risk factor since Gagne had an injury last season, though he played well when he returned from it, so that should be a positive sign for him.

The Flyers should have gotten a better deal. They still had time, and they might have been able to get teams playing against each other for the deal. I think Holmgren was too impatient. And if Gagne stays healthy, he's going to have a big positive impact on whatever team he plays for.

There is also a difference between "fair value" and taking the first offer that comes your way. Homer has a tendency to leap before he looks at all of the options. This is a case of that I believe

i feel like the flyers could've gotten more...opens some space, but in all honesty, for RIGHT now, who are they going to get? unless it's through trade? i mean, for gags i'd demand a 2nd rounder or SOMETHING more. bolts win this deal IMO

Well you know what FLyers...try to be optimistc here. Gagne would have oulled his groin puring himself a glass of milk in the first week of the season, miss two weeks, get injured again, then get injured in the playoffs. He would probably miss significant time and Zherdev will hopefully make up for it.

Agree 100%

I understand gagne was a salary dump. But this move shows there was interest in him. I am happy he was not waived and we got something in return...but ANOTHER F'N DEFENSEMAN?! What the H is homer trying to build here. I would much rather take a shot at a lesser known winger than a lesser known dman that we DO NOT need since we already have about 30 proven solid ones.

Teams can afford to be picky right now. There are still some UFA forwards out their. I bet Boston gets more for Savard than Philly got for Gagne. Which is a bit surprising to me. I know Savard makes less money but, he's got a long term contract & is coming off a serious concussion.

No, I loved Gagne but it is time to move on. He isnt the 24 year old that force a Game 7 against (ironically) the Lightning. He is a 30 year old, injury prone, 5 million dollar cap hit player that the Flyers dont need a whole lot. I would have liked to get more out of him, but Id also like to trade Carcillo for Ovechkin...

I would have thought Gagne could bring more back Philly's way, but I guess they had to trade him and maybe didn't have many offers? He is slightly overpaid but is going to help out TB and make them a competitive team if he stays healthy.

if Matt Walker gets Simon Gagne, I guess the reverse trade for the CAnucks that equals that is Bieksa for Eric Staal :)

I Cant comment on what the flyers fans are saying about this trade as they know the inner workings of their team far better than I. but from what the media reports suggest is that the Flyers are working from a serious weak position in this trade to any team for a factor of reasons

1 - he has a no trade clause which may frighten some teams away for his injuries
2 - his salary and cap is high which may also frighten some cap strained teams with better assets to offer
3 - flyers are close or over the cap no? if so then they did have time to move him to get a better deal but I think as camp draws closer the deal would probably be worse as the flyers have to be under like all teams before the season begins (duh mattola).....

if this was my time I would question what came back especially when you have a glut of good defenseman. what is Walkers Cap hit anyway?

I am just so furious with this move. I know he deserved better, but I would have much rather waived him than take on another contract and obtain a late draft pick.

Shelly, Walker, Carcillo - 4+ mil? (is that right)

Okay, That seems fair enough. I would like to trade Tim Connolly for OV but I don't think the Caps would take that one. :)
