Broncos trade for Cravens.

Swapping 4th and 5th round picks, and sending another pick to Redskins.

Seems like way too much for guy that may not play much.

I agree. Seems like just a 5th rd pick for Cravens would of been sufficient. Washington now gets to leap frog about 8-10 spots in 4 +5 rds . Don't get it. Unless..........Denver's plan is to trade 5th overall pick

Seems pretty minor to give up for a high ceiling guy.

The trade was

Broncos get

Cravens
2018 4th
2018 5th

Redskins get
2018 4th
and 2 5th rounders I assume in 2018?

Confusing, does anyone have what pick numbers these are before I really soak it in? I can check later unless someone has it down already.

Same thoughts. I wouldn't give up a lot for him beings he did at one point retire, but it doesn't seem that bad to me for a guy with his ceiling.

Curious why you think he won't play much? Medically he is cleared, he hasn't really had that many concussions, my only concern was his desire to retire. He claimed concussions but really didn't suffer many, used it more of an excuse. I think the guy is healthier then fans think. Just curious why he lost his desire for a short time.

This trade amounts to the Broncos giving up a 5th round pick and a 7th round pick for him. So very little value for a possible big return.

From the sound of things it boiled down to he really didn't trust the Redskin organization to have his best interest at heart. The team doctors had told him he was healthy and he had gone to an independent doctor who told him he wasn't and once that kind of trust is broke it is hard to want to get back on the field knowing the organization couldn't care less about you.

The Redskins are known for being a bit shady with their players, not sure the details there but not surprised it was the Redskins.

Really pretty fair trade, IMO. Ideally, I wanted to give up a 5th or 6th for him but I can live with this trade. We moved down 4 spots and 7 spots and gave up a 5th.

So where does he play. I suppose he is going to play the role of TJ Ward.

Yes- He is a lot like TJ Ward. Just needs to prove it now, but that is the comparison I gave him coming out of USC.

My guess is he will be that 3rd safety/dimebacker for the Broncos. That is something they have missed greatly for sure. Nick and I just talked last night in our podcast about the Broncos possibly targeting Safeties in this draft because of just needing that type of player.

Broncos last year gave up a league worst 15 TD's to RB's and TE's combined. Will Parks gave up the most TD's (player most likely that Cravens is taking snaps away from) in giving up 4 TD's. The other guy he will be helping is Darian Stewart who gave up the 2nd most TD's with 3 last year.

At this point the nice thing for the Broncos is they have shored up the three biggest areas of need heading into the draft...

QB with Keenum, ILB/Coverage guy with Todd Davis and now Sua Cravens, and of course RT with Veldheer.

Still have a hole at TE.

I would call it more of an unknown. Jake Butt before injury was a low 1st round or early 2nd round pick last year. Obviously his injury caused him to miss the year but the Broncos seem to have hope that he can be a very good player for them. I still expect them to add to the position either through the draft or FA though. Brent Celek is still the guy to watch for the veteran. And I know they have looked pretty hard at the TE position for the draft.

Also I would say that TE was a lesser need than those other three. Still a need but not the we have to go do something right now or we are screwed kind of needs. To me those three I listed were all ones that if we didn't get solved before the draft would become instant needs within the first two rounds of the draft. We might have been forced to reach for a player because of just needing to fill such a hole. Now the Broncos have the entire board open to them.

Cravens and Veldeer both quit or thought about quitting last year so Elway filled some holes with guys who would have a high upside if they want to play.

Good point. I'm not saying they will come in and be the savior by any means. They are low risk high reward type options though. Cravens doesn't even count for $1 million against the cap this upcoming season. So if he quits/retires then the Broncos are out pretty much a 5th round pick. Considering the possible upside of a guy that the Broncos once had a 1st round grade on I would say worth the risk. Same with Veldheer where there is still plenty of football left in him and it cost the Broncos a 6th round pick.

So yes I'm still hoping the Broncos add to those positions. LIke I said the big thing this does is open up the draft where the Broncos don't feel like they have to go get those positions right away. They can let the board fall as they see fit and get the guys that actual hold the highest value to them.
