You might be right. Off the top of my head I can think of 5 people I knew who became or tried to become police officers.

2 were really good guys.
1 was an asshole racist brother of one of my good friends growing up. He became an office then years later was caught transporting drugs for dealers. He did about 10 years.
1 was a friend of a friend who was always looking for trouble. As an officer he shot and killed a kid who he thought was pulling out a gun - but it was a lighter. It was ruled accidental, and I think it was, but if you are always looking for trouble, sometimes you see it where there is none
1 was a friend's brother right out of the marines who said he wanted to be a cop to shoot people. Thankfully he couldn't pass the entrance exam

should be question #1 true or false

i would say it might be higher because it draws an element of people who want to hurt others with impunity :noidea:

My own father was one of the bad ones. And he had his badge taken away from him because his subordinates and colleagues all hated how he treated everyone. He was investigated by internal affairs and punted from the force. That was 1986. Unfortunately, it seems the type of person who would report him are the minority anymore. Good ones retired and were replaced with worse models. And without saying what he did to get booted, I will say the abuse he subjected my mother and I to and his refusal to pay court ordered child support leaving us on welfare was not it.

By comparison, my uncle (Mom's brother) was so beloved as a policeman that when he passed away all the local businesses in the town he lived in closed so everyone could pay their respects to him. My Uncle just saw people. He respected everyone until they gave him a reason not to.

I went to school with a kid like this. always psycho, you didn't know if he was going to come to school loaded for bear one day, or taking out enough of his aggression skinning cats on the weekend.
One of those types with no friends, and always made a party uneasy when he'd show up.

He wanted to join the US military over the Canadian one, as he felt there was a high chance of being able to shoot people.
Last I heard he was selling insurance though. I'm still pretty confident that I'll see his name in the newspaper one day.

Man, taking active measures against police brutality and all other police overreach, holding them accountable to the laws they're purported to uphold--more accountable than private citizens, no less--should be a point on which every American agrees. The civil justice aspect is core to the left. The government non-intervention aspect is core to the right. The vast majority of this country wants these reforms.

Refusing to make them in now that people have taken to the streets to make those opinions unavoidable is absolutely failed governing. Putting down the protests with violence is fascism. Resisting the change people are marching for--forcing them to continue to gather in public to express their position--amid an un-contained, deadly, airborne pandemic is attempted genocide of the state's dissenters.

Did he forget to log in to his alias account? Or is he literally thanking himself?

Also, is he demanding law and order or more of the hit TV franchise?

What a vile, awful man. Supporters of his ought to be taken out...

What did you all think I meant by that?

Far be it from me to union-bust; however.

Make police unions illegal.

Yes, it would be terrible if people went out and hunted down anyone in a MAGA hat...

... and had a good difficult conversation about privilege and how something doesn't have to directly hurt you to be detrimental to everyone in the long run.

I was bruised and battered
I couldn't tell what I felt
I was unrecognizable to police
Saw some busted out windows
And took pepper spray in my face
Oh brother are you gonna leave me wastin' away
On the streets of Philadelphia

Chicago police have been blocking ways out of downtown, leaving protesters trapped when the curfew starts. Then they use violent dispersal methods. It's military-style tactics, brought down on citizens.

It's out of control. I'm so angry. But I also feel completely helpless. And despairing. I've always been optimistic, always felt there was a path to improving things. That's gone. And I feel terrible at how little I've done, and how scared I am to put myself in harms way to help the most vulnerable. And I can't focus at all on writing the dissertation that's due in a couple weeks because it just feels pointless and meaningless in this context, and I feel selfish for working on it instead of working for the cause.

Things were better today, because the cops brought in to guard the statehouse listened and didn't shoot rubber bullets at everyone. Imagine that.

Protests more peaceful on Sunday as police change tactics

Good exchange between Ohio Highway Patrol and protestors. Good open discussion.

But there are reports that CPD and National Guard are assembling at various points around the city. So I guess it's back to skull breaking soon.

First hand account of yesterday:
