That's so odd with Wilmington's pristine history on race. :rolleyes2:

If anyone is unfamiliar with the story of the Wilmington coup, do yourself a favor and at least read the Wikipedia article. It's generally regarded as the only successful coup in US history and was perpetuated by white supremacists to remove a democratically elected government comprised of blacks and non-white-supremacists of what was, at the time, the largest city in North Carolina.

Facebook redeems every once in awhile. This happened last night posted by some All Lives Matter dude I barely knew in high school. This is his post, first names changed:

I'm not gonna bow to foolishness. I just cant. I'm as logical as Mr. Dr. Spock. I took my girls to men's bathrooms cause I had to. I didn't obey the law got arrested. I didn't cry about it. Us as kids never looting just minded our business and really you kids today have it easy. I'm so glad I ran around with the crowd I did. Lester Jones Bryan Shandling Gary Bangs my sister, Marge everyone in my family Mike there's so many. A bunch of Dave's. If you know me there's not a hateful bone in me but I do believe right and wrong. What's happening now is not something we should excuse. Most find it easy to bow well if I bow and I'm alive that means I gave up. I hope this touches at least 1 person for a positive reason.

This post was hilarious for two reasons. (1) Two people responded with "well said" to this series of incoherent non sequiturs. (2) My comment that I added...

Sorry to hear Gary banged your sister.

I don't even think healthcare in Canada is as good as it used to be as we continue to look to cut costs and services and replace RNs with LPNs and healthcare aides that don't have near the training. If nothing else, COVID-19 has certainly revealed that a total overhaul of long term care nursing homes is required.

Is the Canadian system moving in the direction of the US one, or motivated to? Because I advocate for universal health care to the end of ensuring its fully funded to properly provide for everyone even in crisis, and cost-cutting isn't consistent with that goal.

But even then, if the Canadian system is actively terrible, even, the US system manages to be much, much worse.

We shouldn't be worrying about the virus though.

President Party Planner has more important things to do. Mount Rushmore needs fireworks over it because he doesn't have any iconic national monuments nearby.

no doubt ltcs in canada have been a disaster. Is it any wonder that they are largely privatized and for profit and function outside the Canada health act ?

I think one of the biggest issues is people having to wait a very long time due to the public health care system not being able to keep pace with the demand. My daughter has a left knee issue that likely requires surgery and even the time to get a MRI is very long (if she were a professional athlete, it would be the very next day :D). If you're willing to pay big dollars, you can go the private route in some instances. But to answer your question, no, I think few Canadians want to overhaul the Canadian system for the American one.

I think we are moving towards a two tiered system.
If you need an MRI on your knee for example, you can go see you doctor and get a referral note to get on a waiting list of 6-18 months.
Or you can walk on to a soccer pitch, fall down and call an ambulance, and they will get you sorted right away. (I have a friend who did this)
Either option is free (ambulance ride may cost $85)

Or you can go to a private clinic and get it done within a week and pay for it. prob $3-4,000? total guess.

a few anecdotes to give you an idea
- my mother in law spent 2 months in the hospital for very aggressive cancer treatments. In total we were out of pocket about $300
- later once when she was in a care facility, the monthly cost was based off of her income. which was of course low, so the cost was about $2,000 per month for 24 hour care, all food and lodging and most medicine. It was a utilitarian place for sure, so you can again go the private route and pay $10-15,000 per month for as fancy standard of care as you can afford.
- I have some friends who are wealthy, and belong to a private medical group. they get the best of everything for their family, immediately. It costs a significant amount, but they never have to worry about access.
- I am hesitant to go to the doctor to get a prescription refill in the current climate (don't want to add stress to the medical system, and don't wan to be where sick people may be). I just got off of a video call with a doctor to get the refill, my wait time was 10 minutes from when I requested the appointment to when she called, the call took 10 minutes. done, and free. the medicine I need will also be covered by my extended health care (paid for by my work)

That said. If you need to see a doctor for an emergency they get you in.

I went to the emergency with facial paralysis and saw a doctor within 15 minutes.

thankfully it wasn’t a stroke (Bell’s palsy) and i was fine.

I had it again last month and now I have an MRI set up 2 weeks after a neurologist consultation.

when you need it, the system works. Our major issue is the lack of family doctors and the number of walk in clinics who have converted to family practice only. This has strained the emergency room drastically as people go for the stupidest reasons.

Scary stuff, my friend, I hope the docs can figure out what's going on and get it resolved.
