Interesting that the Reds selected 3 former Giants to their active roster.

Reds beat the Cubs today, by a score of 7-6. Why is that significant to this thread? The pitchers of record.
Drew Smyly took the loss for the Cubs.
Alex Young earned the win for the Reds.
Derek Law got the save.
Oh, and Jason Vosler hit a 3 run bomb for the Reds that made the difference in the game.

Darin Ruf is re-signing with the SFGiants on a minor-league deal, sources tell TheAthleticMLB He spent 2020-22 with the Giants, then got traded to the Mets, who released him before Opening Day.

Best OPS, Giants RH hitters 2020-22
Ruf .814
Austin Slater .781
Evan Longoria .778

The Giants traded Darin Ruf in a 5-player deal less than 12 months ago. They now have all 5 of those players

Love what Ruf did in the past but I think this is not helpful. Frankly, I'm surprised, though, that the Phillies didn't try to sign him.

The Giants acquired 2 pitching prospects for Ruf in Nick Zwack & Carson Seymour. They were ‘21 draftees out of college and both are starting the year in AA. It is not uncommon for college picks to reach AA in their 2nd season, but it’s also a sign that both pitchers are making progress.

Bit of a funny detail but the Mets are also on the hook for the remainder of Ruf’s contract. He has a cap hit of $3.125 million in 2023 according to Cot’s.

There is no doubt that the Giants have a huge lead in winning that deal by a landslide. Which makes Ruf's signing more unusual. At this point in his career, what does he bring to the table?

He offers a bit of a veteran presence in Sacto. Outside of that, I suspect he is more transitioning into his post-playing career and will act as a player/coach.

Nice to have him back in the fold. Definitely a well-remembered Giant.

Org depth. AAA emergency OF bat. Mets are paying him.

No downside here.
