Maybe he was testing the weight to friction ratio of a loaded firearm's weight against the durability of common every day duffel bag? This could come in handy given hunting or combat situations given a post apocalyptic landscape. I personally had various duffel bags rip open on me due to slightly abnormal weight management and the results are catastrophic. Your stuff spills out and people nearby start pointing and laughing and if you're in front of a store they wont sell you anything because of the shame.

That must've been it. Only logical explanation.
