it was nice how the eagles did right by him by giving him that "bonus" he was close to at the end of the season, then tagged him to take their money back
And when they gave Foles his bonus the Shit eating Eagles fan were all uppity about how great that franchise. Eagles front office looks like crap now.

I realize you are just trolling, but the mutual option contract that let Philly keep him for $20 million, and Foles to break it and exercise his option to leave by paying back $2 million, was signed a year ago. Both sides seem to consider it totally fair. An unfair deal would have locked Foles in after the SB and not let him become an unrestricted free agent, where Foles is likely to bank way more than $20 million, making the $2 million trivial. You are basically wrong on this, as usual.

Any way you want to spin it, the Eagles didn't have to give Foles the extra million bucks yet they did it anyway. And while they may tag him, to keep him out of Washington and New York, every report suggests they will let him go and let him wind up somewhere else where he can be a starter.

Damn...You guys are in cap hell. I guess that's what happens when you win the Super Bowl as a non Patriots franchise.

Indianapolis may f*cking explode in free agency. Wow.

They'd have looked better had they kept the million and not picked up the option.

There's no way Wentz and Foles are both on the team next season due to cap purposes.

Shit move by the Eagles no matter how you want to sugarcoat it.

I do not think it will go the way wrote. Why would the Eagles let him walk?

So you actually think they keep both? Much as I would love that, the salary cap makes that nearly impossible. Either Wentz or Foles goes and I think it is clearly going to be Foles.

And I think some of you are going to be surprised, but Foles is going to get paid more than Kirk Cousins.

Isn’t Wentz on his rookie contract? What if Eagles Franchise tag Foles and he stays another year ? Foles could make a money grab and stay on the team

Ha Philly was already in cap hell if he accepted the $20M option. The tag would be $25M.

Yes Philly please please do this.

Philly's cap hell is much overrated as usual. They just recently renegotiated the contract for safety Rodney McCloud and reportedly shaved $7 mil off their cap. I am not too worried about cap problems. That said, I think the Eagles have some tough decisions to make with players such as Brandon Graham who are now topping 30 and becoming FAs, and I think they are going to let some of these people walk.

They have some guys that they need to either make decisions on like Bennett and Long, for example or restructure to get that cap number workable. It's doable but not gonna be easy. Shaving McCloud only gets them about 25% of where they need to go. Howie is pretty smart in that regard though.
back to the topic at hand, the franchise tag and trade is really the only smart move here. They can possibly acquire a higher draft pick to get depth on the D and give them room to move a couple veterans. seems like fairly simple math to me. Foles will be either a Jag or a Dolphin next season, I think.

The problem is that the tag means a $25m initial salary for Foles.

If I needed a QB, would Nick Foles interest me? Sure I'd sniff around.

If I needed a QB, would Nick Foles for a 3rd rounder and with the leverage his agent gets from having a $25M opening year salary interest me? Probably not.

That's why I don't think the Eagles tag him. There is just too high a chance that they could lose a game of free agent musical chairs and end up being stuck with Foles on the roster.

As the past 2 years have shown, that wouldn't be a bad thing. He has been the ultimate insurance policy.

He can go get his own team. He's earned it.[/QUOTE

He has, but why can't that team be the Eagles ? You guy's could potentially get back to another Super Bowl with Foles ... Wentz, I don't think it's gonna happen ...

It would be insanely stupid for the Eagles to franchise tag Foles. Foles would sign the contract immediately. That would fully guarantee the contract. He'd hold a press conference saying he wanted to play for the Eagles for the rest of his career. He'd say if the Eagles traded him he'd refuse to show up for the new team during camp. That would nuke any 1 year trade talks. Any team trading would have to agree a long-term deal with him for a lot of guaranteed money AND pay the Eagles trade compensation. Not going to happen. Wentz will also want an extension which the Eagles couldn't afford so the Eagles would be forced into under-selling him. Then they'd have the problem of what to do about Foles in the future. They don't want a repeat of the Redskins - Cousins debacle. It would be a mess.

The Eagles already hold the winning hand. Foles has out-performed his contract, they've squeezed an extra $2M out of him, and they're likely to get a compensatory pick in 2020. They'd be insane to screw it up when there's so little potential upside to tagging Foles.
