Ah yes, the ol' "Floppa Head Fake" is alive and well, rearing it's ugly head in the form of yellow journalism and misinterpreted Swedish..

The quote that the author is pointing to is somewhat mis-translated.

My Swedish is a little rusty, but the original quote is "Vi kanske diskuterade inom gruppen att det nog "är bättre om vi inte går ut och tar ut oss allt för mycket." Alla kände att det här var vår chans. Vi gjorde allt som behövdes för att vinna turneringen."

Would be best translated along the lines of "It's better if we don't go out and take too much out of ourselves."

You almost got it, "nog" is an important word in the quote, meaning probably.. and "tar ut oss", is kind of an expression which I can't find a spot-on translation for, but it basically means "to spend all our energy"... is there a good English expression for that? or maybe "take too much out of ourselves" means the same? all in all a more precise (to the meaning) translation would be:

- Perhaps we discussed within the group that it probably "is better if we don't go out there and spend all our energy"

In a later article Foppa explained that some of the stuff he was quoted on was taken out of context. He also said that "for himself with his big winning mentality it's difficult to find full motivation in games that doesn't need to be won at all cost" (which was the case against Slovakia).. but he also said that "of course you give everything for your team and we did our best based on the conditions, but surely the mental aspect affects your performance"

Nonetheless, we won the Gold medal!

I don't think it's too surprising that his words could be taken out of context. Never read Expressen much myself, but if I recall it wasn't known for having the greatest reputation among Swedish newspapers. Maybe a step above Afton Bladet, but that's about it.
