Just got back vacationing with my son's family and helped both of my Grandchildren catch their first fish!

I felt the same rush when my own kids caught their first. What an incredible part of life to see the excitement in their eyes.

I remember the first time my dad took my little brother out fishing with us. We were fishing off a pier in San Diego looking for perch. My brother tosses in his line and literally hooks a perch in the side and reels it in. To this day I kid him that it is the highlight of his life. He was so excited, jumping up and down. Would have thought he had reeled in a marlin.

Both my kids broke and ran when we reeled their fish up and it came out of the water. My first fish? I couldn't tell ya. I've been fishing since ......... well, I don't remember. It's just something we've always done in my family. I was cleaning my own fish (mostly bream) by the time I was 7 or 8. I think I have a pic of my daughters first fish.

edit: I guess we didn't "reel" them in since we had a cane pole.

Awesome thread.

My Daughter caught her first fish two years ago. It was a little green sunfish. My Son caught his first this year; a decent sized black crappie.

The same day my Son caught his first ever, my Daughter caught her first large mouth bass, I caught a crappie and a couple bass, and my Wife.... caught nothing. LOL, she was pissed.

Introducing my kids to the outdoors early and often has paid dividends now that they are adults with their own children. They embrace the purity and serenity of nature and are now passing it on to their own kids.

At least I did something right as a parent :)

Nothing like taking the grand kids fishing. It takes a special kind f patience too. The first time I took my oldest grand daughter out we went ice fishing. She caught a decent little bluegill and was immediately hooked. She played with that fish all day, named him "Buddy" and fed him wax worms (in spite of him being frozen solid.) She has this picture hanging up in her room:

Goodness what a little doll tiger!

I took one of my son's friends pike fishing this year. He's a sophomore in high school and fishes quite a bit but had never hooked a pike. Got him into about a 12LBer and he near sharted himself!

Thanks! That's a pretty big fish you got their in your avi! What is it?

One of these days I'll have to venture into a colder climate and try to catch one those pike I hear all ya'll talk so much about. The closest thing we have to that is the chained pickerel. We call 'em jackfish and they are usually 2-3 lbs and under. Anything bigger than that is consider a monster and will probably trash whatever gear you're fishing with. They're considered a trash fish.

It's a chinook salmon from the Salmon river in Pulaski, NY. Weighed 33LBs.

I'm heading up next weekend for this year's run...been going annually for almost 30 years now. The steelhead trout run to 15LBs!

We have an awesome pike fishery on the Housatonic river that runs through the berkshires of Western, MA. They EXPLODE at surface lures and when one hits right beside your kayak, you nearly shart yer pants!

If you do come up yonder, try fishing for Muskies. As big a rush as you will find on the water

Holy shit bro!! NICE. That's gotta be like hooking into some these sharks down here. If you don't have the right gear, there is no way you turn them around. They take the bait and leave and spool your reel, leaving you with no line and probably a nice burning smell coming from your reel.

I remember my first fish

I went crappie fishing with my parents and sister and hadn't caught anything all afternoon... my mom and sister left a little early, but me and my dad stayed until dark

I saw that bobber go down and started freaking out... then, my dad came and put another minnow on my hook, I threw it out there and got another one almost instantly... he was back at his spot putting that fish on the line for later

I cried when he cleaned them lol
