If Columbus absolutely had to trade Nash then I don't think they got hosed as badly as some people are stating. There was a short list of teams that Nash would agree to be traded too, plus he makes quite a bit of money. If he was a UFA there are probably a lot of teams that wouldn't sign him for that much money, let alone give up hockey assets for him. I think they could have gotten more in return for him if there was no cap but the salary cap really changes things. Just look at what the Bruins got for Joe Thornton shortly after the cap was introduced as someone had mentioned. The Bruins went on to win a Cup a few years later and it was hardly due to the return they got for Joe Thornton. The main benefit in moving Thornton was the cap space it freed up which was used to sign Chara.

That being said, I was under the impression that not trading him was an option. I really thought that's what they would do. I've always had a soft spot for the BJ's (yeah yeah) so I hope this works out for them. I would love to see them get MacKinnon.

Should of sucked up their pride and traded within the division. Those teams would of expected to have to pay more. (probably a shit ton more). Detroit would have more to lose than Cbus. Maybe one day the Wings would see a Jacket team fighting for first and saying "Man, we shouldn't have traded with them". But what would Columbus say? "Oh no, we stink!" Umm... Not just being a dick, but there aren't many ways to sugar coat it. Teams winning the Cup nowadays and future years to come, imo, have big, big balls and will load up.

Shouldn't have been so quick to take a stance on working with the division. Hell, we even let Hitchcock sit in during our preseason in between his coaching gigs at Cbus and St. Patootie. (Dunno if I like St. "Patootie" yet, but it is fun to say out loud...And yes, I know y'all just did.) Maybe it's the smug, hockey elitest, Motown funkyness part of me talking, but it'd be hard to convince me that his sucess in Patootie isn't related to something he learned from our organization in some way shape or form.

Man up, BJ's! You wanna fuck with the bull, right? GRAB THAT SUMBITCH BY THE HORNS!!

Just my 2 cents.

Signed,
Some Iowa Farmboy that probably don't know shit from Crisco.

Good points. Plus trading within the division would mean more returns to Columbus for Nash which would probably translate into higher attendance for those games. That's if Wings fans don't already help those games sellout anyway.

I would ruin my team out of spite just to keep the Red Wings from getting better. Maybe that I why I am not an NHL GM.

Last I heard, Nash was fine with staying, willing to give up the C and going to try and make amends with the fans. He was going to be in camp, business as usual. Not sure what changed, although I heard that Howson was calling him regularly. Must have recently really pissed him off.

Nash makes 7.8m and the combined salary of what they got was 7.8. This was a business decision, not a hockey one. And I am sorry, but that shit will sink this team. Priest must go too.

Those games are always sold out, because Columbus was a Wings town before they got their own team. Lot of Pens fans around still, also.

That said, the rumored return from the Wings would have made the Jackets reasonably competitive and fueled an already heated rivalry. Those games would have KICKED ASS. And would have set up a Winter Classic at UM stadium or the Shoe perfectly. 100k fans plus, easy.

I guess I am not a hockey fan anymore.

So fucking tired of retarded management ruining my enjoyment.

I hope the PA and League can't agree on shit and the league just fucking folds.

At least I saved a shit load of money on season tickets and they wanted my son to try out for the Junior Jackets. I will have NOTHING related to that team until that mother fucker gets gonorrhea and dies in a fiery car crash while getting mauled by lions.

I dont know that I can support that 43. Would the poor lions get sick from the gonorrhea?

I decided to wait until I was back at work to go to the Dispatch and read what Twatwaffle had to say.

Here is his insightful commentary on Nash. His best bud whom he will miss terribly and in no way has been trying to demonize since 2008.

61 Thoughts | BlueJackets Xtra

Some highlights:
No. 6 = Rebuild or reshape – the debate rages. Nash said he was told the team was rebuilding, so he asked for a plane ticket out of town with certain destinations in mind. The Blue Jackets, led by GM Scott Howson, say they never used the word rebuild, and never planned to start over again as a franchise. They expect to be competitive with a newly configured team in 2012-13. When presented these conflicting scenarios on Monday, a few hours after the trade, Nash said: “I know what I heard in that room. It was ‘rebuild.’ That’s what I was told. Since then, I’ve heard rebuild and reshape. But I was told rebuild.”

I wonder if he would have been so committed to leaving if Howson had simply communicated properly.

No. 13 = Wonder if, or how soon, the Blue Jackets will re-issue the No. 61 sweater? How soon is too soon? I bet there are some in Nationwide Arena who think the number should be retired when Nash is done playing. Not kidding.

Not kidding huh? Seems kind of a no brainer to me, especially when you take in all the "Best athlete we'll ever see" stuff.

No. 14 = Think Nathan MacKinnon would ask for No. 61?

That's the spirit. Bag next season before it even starts.

No. 20 = Foote. Carter. Nash. These are players who have asked to be traded or have played their way out of Columbus, all since 2008. Coincidence? Or is there a bigger issue nobody is willing to truly confront? Or experienced enough to even realize?

Duh. No one who wants to win will stay long in an organization that doesn't. As much as it hurt when John Elway refused to come to the Colts, it did make us face a hard truth.

No. 23 = Nash’s name dominates the Blue Jackets’ record book. That’s obvious proof of what he’s meant to this franchise. Look a little further, though. The stunning lack of talent surrounding Nash, and the revolving door on the dressing room, is brought into focus when you look at the gap between Nash and the No. 2 guy in most categories. Nash played 131 more games, had 161 more goals, 54 more assists, 230 more points, 47 more power play goals, 27 more game-winning goals and 1,358 more shots on goal than the guy behind him. And the guy behind him in every instance was right winger David Vyborny.

Anyone got any Pepto?

No. 27 = Now that Nash is gone, the longest tenured Blue Jacket is right winger Jared Boll, drafted in 2005. The only guys still on the roster since GM Scott Howson’s first season (2007-08) are Boll, Derek MacKenzie and Derick Brassard. New sign on the dressing room: “Please Use Revolving Door”

Stunning. Simply stunning.

No. 32 = That’s the only time Nash ever voiced his displeasure with anything.

Talking about wanting to get a deal done, complained it was taking too long because he didn't want to be a distraction. That's it. That's all he ever griped about. Clearly, you don't want that attitude around.

No. 50 = The trade of Nash means that only one first-round draft pick during MacLean’s run as GM remains with the club: Derick Brassard in 2006. Rostislav Klesla, Pascal Leclaire, Rick Nash, Nikolai Zherdev, Alexandre Picard and Gilbert Brule … they’re all gone.

So in addition to having the hockey sense of a shoe, he's trying to clean out all the exes stuff.

Doug Maclean did not do a good job as Blue Jackets GM and Scott Howson has managed to be more inept than Maclean. The Jackets do have some good young players with Johansen and Atkinson, but they need to surround those guys with some decent players.

Yes, but are the Flyers better now than they were then? You can make moves that make sense and you can make moves that break shit.

Someone pointed something out to me today that I hadn't thought of. Johansen and Atkinson are natural centers. So are Umberger and Brassard. And now Dubinski and Anisimov.

How much you wanna bet that Johansen gets traded? After he winds up on the 4th line and gets no shot at proving himself, that is.

I'll take Johansen on the Flames - Heck, I'll drive to Columbus to pick him up.

Edit: And I live on an island, so it's not that simple.

The problem is Dubinsky & Anisimov are decent players. They just aren't the players Howson supposedly thinks they are. All we heard was Howson was holding out for a package he couldn't refuse. If what the Rangers gave up is what Howson thinks is that kind of package he blew it period. I thought getting Jack Johnson & a 1st round pick for Carter was a solid move. The Nash trade could go down as one of the most lopsided trades in a long time. One thing we need to remember is Nash has never played with a quality center. He's going to be playing with Brad Richards now. One of the best passers in the game today.

I had so much hope. But that's his M.O. For every solid move he fucks the dog two or three times.

I am expecting Nash to get 40 this year. He will come back to Columbus for the All Star Game. And Columbus will have Vinny Prospal in it.

ya i'm not saying the flyers haven't gotten better.. just making the point that the turnover in the NHL is ridiculous.. having a guy like Nash that had been on the team for close to 10 years is an abnormality these days unless youve signed a new contract in the past 3 years

he's also going to play in new york where the think about playing offense once or twice a year.. i honestly dont expect nash's numbers to improve at all.. i could see them going down actually.. playing with a better cast i agree, but if the rangers play the same style they did last year (5 goalies positioned throughout the d-zone, and 1 real fast guy ready for a breakaway), nash isn't going to get the opportunity to shine

i guess i have a pretty rare opinion here, but i actually think the rangers got worse with this trade.. the BJs might not have gotten better either, but i definitely dont think the rangers got better

So I have to ask, Forty Three, are you planning on following another team this year or holding out for a front-office change?

I've always been more a fan of the game or certain players than a specific team. I've had teams I liked better than others. Growing up where there was only AHL hockey had an effect on that. I got into whoever the parent club was because I saw the youngsters. I was closer to two AHL teams (Hershey and Baltimore) than the two closest NHL teams (Philly and Caps). I get so crazy about the game that I consume information pretty, uhhh, enthusiastically.

I will watch hockey this year, but probably won't get too wrapped up any team. At least not until Howson is killed and sold for parts. ;) Not much point in getting wrapped up in what the Jackets do this year when the biggest thing the organization is worried about is what number next year's first overall draft pick will want to wear. It sucks because the All Star Game is here, and I'd really want to see that. I just can't bring myself to support the Jackets with the season tickets needed to get those seats. Gonna have to play on some relationships to see the ASG, I guess.

I expect I will be going to a lot of OSU hockey games this year.

Very nice. I was a pretty big Cleveland Lumberjacks fan growing up, so I can relate to a passion for the up-incomers.. but then I got older and didn't have the time to follow.

Who knows? You and Jeff may be rooting for the same team by the end of the year... whoever that may be.
