Ohlendorf is with the Red Sox on a minor league deal. I am shocked they wasted that on Cabrera over him. Maybe he didn't want to come back?

They beat Jones in arbitration and will earn 2.25 million.

McGehee agreed at 2.5375 million.

So it looks like there 1B's will earn 4.78 million? For that price I doubt there is a replacement worth it. If they were willing to spend more there would be some worth it like a Pena.

- Disappointing indeed. At least we know that the Red Sox thought Ohlendorf was worth a shot. I gotta feeling we may never know whether or not he wanted to come back to the Pirates. NH probably won't comment, and Ohlendorf is probably too smart to say anything negative.

- Although I wish him well and hope he succeeds, it will be even more disappointing (for the Pirates) if Ohlendorf contributes for Boston.

- Hope that no hard feelings were generated in the Jones hearing.

- Gotta feeling that the Pirates will get more for less from 1B than they did last year. But probably not a lot more. And that's far from a sure thing.

Well,

If Evans makes the team, and I think he will... I wonder how his playing time will alter the 1b's and the 4.78 million equation. Now I know we can add Evans Salary into the mix easy enough... But we just have to wait and see how he hits ( I think he will surprise people with his bat, based on his Minor league totals )

But then again Mcgehee might be playing third base, so that will alter this combination and equation also!

If all three are on the team then against lefties we will see McGehee at 3B with Evans at 1B. But if that is the case the value of the 1B position would be even less and I highly doubt there is anything even remotely close to the production of an Evans/Jones at that price.

That is probably the best scenario but we will see. If Alvarez totally craps the bed in Spring Training the good news this year the starting 3B will be McGehee so that is the only part that makes me feel better vs last year when his replacements were horrible (not in terms of Alvarez but in general)
