What's your favorite album of the 2010's?

I know... It's always nearly impossible to narrow down favorites to just one - especially in music, but that's what I'm asking for here. This isn't plural, it's singular: Album. Only one. Make a tough decision.

  • Only new original albums released 2010-2019 qualify.
    • No re-releases or remasters of older albums qualify.
    • Saying an old classic album is still your favorite in 2019 defeats the purpose of this thread. Again, new music only.
  • Include in your post...
    • Name of Artist "Name of Album" (Year Released)
    • Videos of three of your favorite songs on the album as a good representation of the album.
    • (optional) Why it is your favorite. If there's a backstory to how or why it became your favorite or touched your life, share it.

Avatar - "Black Waltz" (2012)

I experienced Avatar for the first time a few years ago at the annual Rock USA music festival in Oshkosh and they blew me away. I had never even heard of them previously, but that concert spurred me to download their "Black Waltz", "Hail the Apocalypse" and "Feathers & Flesh" albums the following morning and they became my "2010's Band of the Decade". All three albums are essentially one album to me, so picking just one is no insignificant task. I went with "Black Waltz" because it's the most balanced collection of songs of the three.

The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream.

I picked these three songs because I feel like you can listen to them and they're immediately derivative of an older band but its all very fleeting. It then leads you into a nostalgic groove and it all fits together as something very melancholy as it simultaneously overstays it welcome yet gives no sense of closure.

And stuff.

There wasn't any good music produced since 2010.

Released in 2017:

Hudson (album) - Wikipedia

Music giants Jack DeJohnette, Larry Grenadier, John Medeski, and John Scofield, join forces in the electrifying new jazz-meets-rock supergroup, Hudson. Inspired by the beauty and spirit of their home region, New York’s Hudson River Valley, these famed improvisers bring fresh dimensions to Woodstock associated classics by Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix and The Band and as well as compelling original compositions. The music also celebrates NEA Jazzmaster Jack DeJohnette’s 75th birthday.

Full Album....

John Medeski – piano, electric piano, organ, flute, vocals
John Scofield – guitar, flute
Larry Grenadier – double bass, vocals
Jack DeJohnette – drums, vocals

So be it.

My son asked me my #1 album of the decade a few days ago. It was a question that sparked an interesting contemplation and subsequent dialog. If it doesn't do the same in this medium... oh well.

You're fine...I just don't know if I can narrow it down to one. There is a lot of differing criterion when deciding. There are straight-favorites, and then there are some that are bumped up the list due to circumstances, like say the band having a long hiatus and the need for new material being overdue. So much good stuff to choose from...

Most anticipated due to hiatus:
Sleep - The Sciences
Faith No More - Sol Invictus
John Prine - Tree of Forgiveness

Personal Faves:
Melvins: The Bride Screamed Murder, Hold It In, Basses Loaded, A Walk with Love and Death and Pinkus Abortion Technician

Clutch: Earth Rocker, Psychic Warfare and Book of Bad Decisions

Mastodon: The Hunter, Once More Around the Sun, Emperor of Sand and Cold Dark Place

Tomahawk: Oddfellows

Church of Misery: Thy Kingdom Scum

Fu Manchu: Gigantoid and Clone of the Universe

I guess I'll go with...

Mastodon - The Hunter and Sleep - The Sciences in a two-way tie.

Fuck, I told ya I couldn't do it, and that's half of what I originally typed.

Screaming Females - Castle Talk
Propagandhi - Victory Lap
Sleater-Kinney - No Cities To Love
Broken Social Scene - Hug of Thunder

Tool - Fear Inoculum

Interesting. That's pretty high praise. I like the album, but best of the decade? I personally have 3 albums ahead of it for 2019 alone.

fucking Tool fans, man...y'all act like they invented music, and then time-traveled here, after saving the galaxy and baby Jesus.

Y'all are just hypnotized by the bells and whistles.
