That'd be a lopsided deal for Seattle, even if Houston can't sign him
For a rental? I think not. I hope the Seahawks don’t trade for him. Hardly anyone gets much for rentals.

It’s not that I don’t want him. He can’t sign anything but the franchise tag until next season, the tag is 15 million. Then he’ll go to the highest bidder. IDK that his addition makes the Seahawks Super Bowl contender. I think it’s short sighted to mortgage some your future for short term gain that likely falls short of going to the SB. Think the right move is just stick to the draft and continue to develop the young players for now.
i guess, i thoguht he could sign the tag, then get a contract....

I can't imagine a trade going down where there wasn't a pre-arranged agreement in a long term deal. Don't think the team trading for him would do it, don't think Clowney would so it, otherwise he'd likely have signed the tag to start with

CBA doesn’t allow Clowney to sign anything but the Franchise Tag only until next season.

That doesn't mean agents and team reps don't get things done behind the scenes. It may not be announced or official, but a trade ain't happening without a deal in principle. CBA also doesn't allow free agents to negotiate or sign before whatever date that's set at, but we know that's a bunch of bullhucky too

The trade would have to be agreed on, Clowney would then have to sign the tag so that he could be traded, and he ain't signing the tag without a new deal ready to sign right after the trade is official.., and any team would be extremely foolish to make that trade without a deal in place. So ain't nothing happening without a new contract "in place"

A "unofficial" deal would be too easy to break for both parties Treff. Clowney suffers a serious injury the Seahawk( or who ever trades for him) could fail to honor the" unofficial" deal. If Clowney has a kick ass season, cap rises and better offers are out their ( maybe much better) he doesn't have to honor the "unofficial" deal.

Edit: Ok your saying immediately following the signing of the franchise tag sign yet another deal? Would that draw the league attention? I would think so.
They don't seem to mind when players sign free agency contracts at 12:01 on the opening day of free agency, nor the deals where everyone and their mothers know the details of the deal days before the opening of free agency.

I mean, Clowneys whole issue is a long term contract, Houston can't do a dang thing with him unless he signs the tag, and he ain't signing the tag without some pretty concrete assurances of a long term deal, wherever he goes. And breaking a "gentleman's agreement" looks awfully bad for a team in future negotiations with potential free agents, not to mention the handshake agreements they have with their own players. Ya know, the "hey, we'll get you extended in the off season, don't worry about it".. They screw over this guy, their trust is zero with a ton of other players.
Hell either sit out, ala L. Bell, play out the tag in Houston, or get traded and immediately sign a longer deal...maybe if they deal him to a super bowl favorite, a NE, LAR, KC, , maybe he'd sign to play out the tag for a team like that...maybe. But just a playoff contender or worse? There will be long term security involved on the trade negotiation, CBA or no.

Honestly, why on earth would any team even consider serious trade negotiations, considering the price tag they'd have to give up, without equal assurances on their end, that Clowney would sign a long term deal with them as well?

One hand, not surprised at all. One the other, I am shocked Buffalo fisted him in the final cuts. Thought they had more class than that, and that if they were gonna do it, should've been much earlier to allow him a shot at another team's camp. Luckily for him, theres an opening in Houston, a shot in TB, maybe even Miami. Add another name to the list of available "lead" types that Houston can sign and not have to trade for.

Pretty disgusted. First time with the new regime.

Couldn't get a 6th from Tampa or something?

i think it was all contract related - no one wanted to take on the 9 large for an old RB

still think he stays in AFC and lands on a contender - or is this his ride into the sunset, goes to the highest bidder regardless of situation?

so far, he's the only one cut that I actually care to see where he lands.
should be a wild next 5hrs as teams start chopping players

It was absolutely contract related. Which makes it worse. Not like this flew up on them yesterday.

I really, really, really, thought they'd get a pick for him somewhere.
