Nick Fairley - DL - Free Agent
The Lions have begun informing agents around the NFL that they're out of the mix for free agent Nick Fairley.

One year after declining Fairley's 2015 option, the Lions appear to be washing their hands of the 2011 top-15 draft pick. Although Fairley has been a difference maker on the field when healthy, the Lions have special insight into him and must believe he isn't worth the trouble. Fairley will visit the Bengals today. He's the top interior D-Lineman left in free agency.

Nice work NOT picking up Fairleys 5th year. Getting Ngata does not make up for losing both Suh and Fairley.

If we could get first-5-games-2014 Fairley, clearly a disaster. If instead the only reason the fat bastard worked hard for the first time in his career was because his future earnings were on the line, maybe not. If the Lions think the market for him is $8MM or more per year and someone will offer him significant guaranteed money, I'd bow out too. In a hurry. There's a chance he grows up, but I see more 'Haynesworth without the talent' than difference-maker.

The Lions front office has a much better idea of his work ethic as well his overall health. I soulsnt want them breaking the bank for a guy that doesn't seem to give it his all 100% of the time nor stays healthy all the time. For a reasonable contract, of course. I just don't think it's what he's looking for. Dudes gotta eat for crying out loud.

I'm not disappointed. I was becoming a Fairley fan until he got hurt and Mosley stepped right in and was almost as effective. Both were playing great thanks to Suh.

I happen to think it was a blessing in disguise, him getting hurt. Had he played the whole year at that same level, I bet the front office would have panicked when Suh left and broke the bank for Fairley. Fairley getting a 5 year $55 mil contract would have been an absolute nightmare.

Have to give props to the front office. The Lions now have exactly ZERO draft picks from 2010 and 2011 on their team. Not a single one. That is embarrassing.

It's crazy how little they kept from those two drafts. Hopefully we can get the cap under control and start to retain some of our own. Some of the guys are out of the league because Young, Fairley, Fox, and Suh are all guys that we could/should have on our team if we weren't continually cap strapped. We could actually be ok cap wise after this year. (not great but ok.)

Was it the Wonder Twins that said they were going to build a team through the draft? Somethin' fishy... letting the best player go, investing into injured players and letting what was suppose to be building a team through the draft has only been kool-aid for the fans. Fans are paying so they can ride the gravy train, or what?

Nick Fairley moves on to visit with Rams | ProFootballTalk

So he's been to the Bengals and the Rams, two teams that are always awesome on defense. Figures. After years and years and years and years of having one of the worst D's in the NFL, the Lions finally put together a top D and of course then let them go. Smart.

It should say something to you that no one is signing him. Even teams absolutely loaded with cash and definite needs at the position aren't even talking with him.

I'm not sure the door is really closed on him. I suspect we walked away because his asking price was too high. If nobody is biting on that price then it has to come down. Maybe he comes back into the mix for us when that happens.

I still think a short term two year deal on him makes sense. He isn't worth the $5.5m option we didn't pick up. At this stage in his disappointing career he is a $4-5m avg and nothing more.

Best case scenario, he comes crawling back with a lowered value, and we give him a 1 year deal for $5 mil. I'll take him for another contract year.

As with most years, I'll choose to wait and see what the draft and the rest of the offseason moves bring before passing judgment. Ngata is a top-5 defensive tackle. Ansah should continue to get better. Tahir Whitehead made great strides last year, and I'd hope a healthy Van Noy does the same. With Tulloch and Levy, the Lions could have one of the best linebacker groups in the league.

That said, you don't lose your best two interior lineman on defense without there being some impact. We shall see. The nice thing is Detroit gains about $9 million in the Suh/Ngata swap, and another $5.5 million it would have taken to keep Fairley. They can acquire some talented pieces for that D with an extra $14 mill.

So a one year prove it deal. So apparently nobody wanted to go long term with him.

So it was not just the Lions not trusting him.
