Thats the only argument anybody ever has to defend Jaybo. But he doesn't hit, doesn't block shots, doesn't put up points, his +/- is terrible (not a great stat I realize). If I got in to really good shape and could play 25 min/night in the NHL, that wouldn't make me a good defenseman, I promise you that haha

And carle really only played with pronger for a year and a half, and not at all this year. And from watching the all the games that featured that pair, carle was just as important as pronger was to their success. Defensively, pronger has been a step behind since coming to Philly.

If Carle is so good why didn't the Flyers keep him? Your team basically replaced Carle with Schenn. Who replaces Pronger?

I don't understand that either. I've always been impressed by Carle. The only thing I can think is that Holmgren thinks they are overpaying far too many defenseman right now. But that is offset by underpaying most of their forwards.

To put this in perspective the Islanders highest paid defenseman is Mark Streit at 4.1M & he's in the final year of his contract. Visnovsky has a cap hit of 5.6M, however his salary for this season is 3M. His contract is a dream come true for Wang.

I was shocked at what Calgary gave Wideman because I knew Carle was going to get more. I know defenseman are important, but the salaries have gotten out of hand. Drew Doughty at 5.8 is going to become a bargain.

Both Carle & Wideman now make more money than Bobby Ryan. Sorry, but I think there's something wrong with that. I understand why Suter got his contract from Minny. He's a #1 defenseman. Wideman & Carle are 2nd pair defenseman. Some might consider Wideman a powerplay specialist & a bottom pair defenseman.

Should defenseman like Carle & Wideman make more money than 30 goal scorers?

No, but that's not the way it is. Giroux was one of the league leaders last year and made 1/3 of what Crosby does, who sat most of the year because he was scared to play and couldn't man up and just play hockey (kidding, Pens' fans...kidding!). Salaries are rarely fair. They change and increase over time. They are dependent partially on the talent of the person, but also the market of what's available at that time. I don't think the salaries are "out of hand" b/c I don't see one single team currently over the salary cap.

Teams are overvaluing players like Wideman & Carle because they can get them without having to give up any assets. The UFA market is drying up. There will be fewer & fewer UFA's available in coming years because teams are signing their young players to long term deals. I remember hearing a few years ago quite a few so called experts saying teams will be able to dump these guys near the end of these ridiculous contracts on teams trying to reach the cap floor. Guess what there's only one team really looking to reach the floor every year & they aren't in business to help everyone else out.

Once Doan & Semin sign it will be TRADE SEASON.

Hey, no sweat off my back. Washington just got done lining Ovie's wallet as the highest paid player in the league last year(per cap hit), but he ranked outside of the top 25 scorers in the game in 2011-12 :dhd:

They're all overpaid. Some more than others. All depends on when free agency arrives for each player, and how much demand there is for the position.

beats me.. 5.5 seems a little high for him, but its really not that bad when you look at other contracts around the league.. guess they're hoping schenn pans out and by not signing carle to an extension it gives them a little more flexibility next year and more importantly, the year after (bschenn, couturier, giroux are all RFA)

and it was more taking shots at jbo then defending carle.. :)

Semin and Doan need to sign and move this offseason along. It's been insanely quiet for about 2 weeks it feels like. Everything has ground to a halt. ENTERTAIN ME NHL GMs.

I think they'll both sign the same day. Once one blinks, the value of the other rockets.

You see, I would think that too...but I thought once Parise/Suter signed the gates would open in other places. But jeez, since then...nothin'.

Well, I think that most of us saw Doan and Semin as the second level of UFA hype. Is anyone really notable left after that?

@eloklund... Rumor has it a major trade centered around a sign and trade with Semin and the Blackhawks' Toews could be announced today. 1 other Cap+pick and 1 other Hawk involved, but no details yet.

No way that happens. I can't think of a scenario in which Toews gets moved. Kane would be much more likely.

I want to see Toews get moved ... add that to the rumoured Bolland for Luongo trade offer from the BHawks ... Id like the Blackhawks to experiment with the concept of playing without a legit NHL center

Agreed. I would have loved to have him a few years ago, but it's just not great timing. We need a long term solution on Crosby's line. Kunitz and Dupuis have been good, but it would be nice to get an upgrade there.
