If there was an expansion team, which one player from each team would you take off in order to make the expansion team?
For teams protecting only one goaltender, there was no experience requirement for those left unprotected. For teams protecting two goaltenders, each goaltender left unprotected must have appeared in either 10 NHL games in the 1999–2000 season or 25 games in the 1998–99 season and 1999–2000 seasons combined. A goaltender had to be in net for at least 31 minutes in each game for the game to be counted against these totals.
At least one defenceman left unprotected by each team had to have appeared in at least 40 games in the 1999–2000 season or 70 games in the 1998–99 season and 1999–2000 seasons combined. At least two forwards left unprotected by each team had to have met the same requirements.
52 players were chosen in the draft, two from each participating franchise. Only one goaltender or one defenseman could be selected from each franchise. Both the Blue Jackets and the Wild were to use their first 24 selections on three goaltenders, eight defensemen, and thirteen forwards. The final two picks for each team could be any position.
Haha, the Sabres don't have enough players worth protecting unless AHL guys count. Going purely based on what CapGeek lists as the NHL roster and including even those who are UFA or RFA it would be as follows:
Goalie - Neuvirth
D - Ristolainen (Seriously. Just him. I guess you could put Myers and Ehrhoff in, but I don't see anyone taking them anyhow because of their contracts.)
F - Hodgson, Girgensons, Ennis, DesLauriers, Stewart, Mitchell, Flynn
I guess based on the numbers I could take a 2nd goalie so that would leave only Enroth. Meh.
Definitely a few guys in the system I wouldn't want taken, but assuming they're not eligible. Fascing (definitely not eligible) and Zadorov being the main two.
I'm less certain about Myers but I'd definitely grab Ehrhoff if I were the expansion team GM
I'd probably protect them if I didn't have to use those slots on prospect guys just to avoid the risk of losing them for nothing.
But Myers still has 5 years at $5.5M and Ehrhoff has 7 at $4M. His hit is reasonable, but the term is scary. Myers' contract is a total disaster.
Oh, and they both have some form of NTC/NMC.

Goc is a UFA this off-season, no?

Truly can't disagree with that group. Now there is part of me that would think about leaving Letang unprotected due to the contract.
How about this - since I'm not sure whether FA's or players outside the NHL count, you don't have to count them - sound good?
"Exempt from the Expansion Draft are (i) all first and second-year pros and (ii) unsigned draft choices (except unsigned draft choices drafted from European clubs in the 1996 Entry Draft or before and who remain unsigned)."
I had him off the list initially for that reason, Neal, too, but I figured I'd rather not lose the asset for nothing, contract or no.
Fleury, on the other hand, I deemed either more replaceable or lower in trade value or both.
