If there was an expansion team, which one player from each team would you take off in order to make the expansion team?

Remember, you can protect one goalie, five d-men and nine forwards or two goalies, three d-men and seven forwards

For teams protecting only one goaltender, there was no experience requirement for those left unprotected. For teams protecting two goaltenders, each goaltender left unprotected must have appeared in either 10 NHL games in the 1999–2000 season or 25 games in the 1998–99 season and 1999–2000 seasons combined. A goaltender had to be in net for at least 31 minutes in each game for the game to be counted against these totals.

At least one defenceman left unprotected by each team had to have appeared in at least 40 games in the 1999–2000 season or 70 games in the 1998–99 season and 1999–2000 seasons combined. At least two forwards left unprotected by each team had to have met the same requirements.

52 players were chosen in the draft, two from each participating franchise. Only one goaltender or one defenseman could be selected from each franchise. Both the Blue Jackets and the Wild were to use their first 24 selections on three goaltenders, eight defensemen, and thirteen forwards. The final two picks for each team could be any position.

For the Flyers(one goalie, five d-men and nine forwards):

Goalie:
Steve Mason

D-Men:
Mark Streit
Andrew MacDonald
Braydon Coburn
Luke Schenn
Kimmo Timonen

Forwards:
Claude Giroux, Jake Voracek, Wayne Simmonds, Matt Read, Sean Couturier, Brayden Schenn, Jason Akeson, Michael Raffl, Scott Hartnell (I don't think Scott Laughton counts because technically he's not on the roster yet)

Haha, the Sabres don't have enough players worth protecting unless AHL guys count. Going purely based on what CapGeek lists as the NHL roster and including even those who are UFA or RFA it would be as follows:

Goalie - Neuvirth
D - Ristolainen (Seriously. Just him. I guess you could put Myers and Ehrhoff in, but I don't see anyone taking them anyhow because of their contracts.)
F - Hodgson, Girgensons, Ennis, DesLauriers, Stewart, Mitchell, Flynn

I guess based on the numbers I could take a 2nd goalie so that would leave only Enroth. Meh.

Definitely a few guys in the system I wouldn't want taken, but assuming they're not eligible. Fascing (definitely not eligible) and Zadorov being the main two.

I'm not sure I can find that many Leafs I'd want to protect. Let me see

G - Bernier, Reimer

D - Phaneuf, Gardiner, Rielly (I might keep Gunnar if I thought Phaneuf's contract would scare them off of picking him)

F - Kessel, Van Riemsdyk, Kadri, Lupul, Bozak, Peter Holland

What are we doing with upcoming UFAs? I don't have a 7th forward unless they're included, unless either of Jerry D'Amigo or Carter Ashton counts. Ashton actually has 47 career games so he probably has to be protected, so I'll make him the 7th.

I'm less certain about Myers but I'd definitely grab Ehrhoff if I were the expansion team GM

I'd probably protect them if I didn't have to use those slots on prospect guys just to avoid the risk of losing them for nothing.

But Myers still has 5 years at $5.5M and Ehrhoff has 7 at $4M. His hit is reasonable, but the term is scary. Myers' contract is a total disaster.

Oh, and they both have some form of NTC/NMC.

I wouldn't be pumped about it but I'd take my chances with Ehrhoff's contract. He's really underrated I think. The situation would be manageable.

How about this - since I'm not sure whether FA's or players outside the NHL count, you don't have to count them - sound good?

Hmm:

G: Schneider
D: Gelinas, Larsson, Merrill, Greene, Volchenkov
F: Zajac, Henrique, Jagr, Elias, Zubrus, Ryder, Brunner (the last 2 could go for all I care but they have one year left each at reasonable prices). Everyone else can go.

Truly can't disagree with that group. Now there is part of me that would think about leaving Letang unprotected due to the contract.

If I didn't count UFAs, I couldn't have even gotten close to filling the requirements.

Penguins under contract next year:
F - Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Kunitz, Dupuis, Bennett, Adams
D - Letang, Martin, Scuderi, Maatta, Bortuzzo (I could have protected five, but then I would have broken the "unprotected" rule)
G - Fleury, Zatkoff

So my only other option was to protect the whole roster with the 2-goalie format, and then not be in compliance with the rules about who to leave unprotected.

I had him off the list initially for that reason, Neal, too, but I figured I'd rather not lose the asset for nothing, contract or no.

Fleury, on the other hand, I deemed either more replaceable or lower in trade value or both.

Kings:

G: Jonathan Quick

D: Drew Doughty, Jake Muzzin, Slava Voynov, Alec Martinez, Robyn Regehr

F: Anze Kopitar, Jeff Carter, Dustin Brown, Justin Williams, Mike Richards, Tyler Toffoli, Tanner Pearson, Jarret Stoll, Trevor Lewis

Marian Gaborik, Willie Mitchell and Matt Greene are UFA's & Dwight King is an RFA so they wouldn't count

Kyle Clifford and Jordan Nolan are the only two under contract that I left off on the forward group and Martin Jones was left off, some team in need of goaltending would get a really solid goalie

I counted FA's just because you'd think that if the team wanted to keep them during FA they'd want to protect them also. And until FA kicks in they're still technically a member of that team.

I did find this on some of the system guys (emphasis mine):

"Exempt from the Expansion Draft are (i) all first and second-year pros and (ii) unsigned draft choices (except unsigned draft choices drafted from European clubs in the 1996 Entry Draft or before and who remain unsigned)."

I guess that would mean system guys would be allowed if they've signed at least a two-way contract and aren't in the 1st or 2nd year of that. Not really sure though :noidea:

Great point on all three. And knowing if this were ever true and the amount of goalies that would be unprotected I doubt he would be drafted.

We know Neal would be drafted and still wonder if that contract would a team pick Letang? Especially an expansion team that would want to build over time not wanting that big of burden for an extended period.
