Just my opinion, but accountability should take priority over intent. I don't know if Chara's intent was malicious, but he should be held accountable for his actions putting a guy on the shelf for who knows how long. Accidents happen in everyday life to people with no intent of causing harm, but they are usually held accountable regardless.

This may be true dash, but then the Canadiens should be held accountable for putting the turnbuckle there in the first place because it's in a dangerous place. what are players supposed to do, not play hockey in the area of the turnbuckle? Nothing has ever been said when players got checked and went into the end of the end glass, but now it's a big deal because of a turnbuckle at center ice. I don't like what happened anymore than any other fan, but I don't think Chara meant to hurt him. Hockey, and football, are rough, physical sports and players are going to get hurt, even on clean plays. If the player doesn't get hurt it's only a 2 minute interference penalty, and if you watch any hockey game, players finish checks late all the time that could be considered interference and are never called. JMO

That's the kicker for me, though, the fact that it wasn't a clean play due to a penalty for interference being called on Chara and the extreme consequences for Pacioretty that followed. You are absolutely right, players indeed get injured on clean plays and that's just an element of a tough, physical game. However, when players commit transgressions to the rules of the game and as a result a player is injured, there should be repercussions for that act, in my opinion.

That's true, but if that stupid turnbuckle isn't there, and it shouldn't be, it's just a normal interference penalty. I really don't think Chara meant to hurt him. People keep saying where his arm is, but if you look at any check, players follow through with their arms like that. Players also get checked into the end glass and nothing is ever made of it. I think it being a Montreal player is why such a big deal is being made. Do you honestly think if it were a Bruins player there would be such an outcry, especially from Habs fans? Do you think Air Canada would be complaining? Would the Montreal police be conducting a criminal investigation? I think we all know the answers to those 3 questions.

Come on!!! You can't really believe that, can you?

Maybe a big deal is being made out of it because a guy's neck was LITERALLY broken.

I agree 100% with Dash on this one. If you intentionally commit a foul and it results in serious injury there should be repercussions, period. IN Chara's case I don't believe the penalty should have been severe as he was, IMO, just slightly *reckless in his play*.

* I say he was reckless in his play because he freely admitted that he knew they were near the bench. Grinding a guy into the bench at that speed, with sticks, skates and bodies there, can very easily result in an injury. Obviously not one as severe as what happened but even if Patches had just gone into the bench it would have been dangerous.

I do not think its a big deal just because its a Montreal player.

Naturally there wouldnt be as big of an outcry from the Habs fans if it was a Bruins player hit like that. Is that wrong? I dont know, but its human nature. A lot of people do not get upset or involved in something unless it affect them. I do know that there would a huge outcry from Bruin fans if it was a Bruin player, and I have huge doubts that as many would think this hit clean as they do now. And yeah, in other outlets both national and regional I think there would be about the same outcry if it was a Bruins player.

I don't know any thing about Air Canada, so I do not really have an opinion.

Seeing that there was a criminal investigation when the visiting player Steve Moore was injured, I see no reason to completely assume that there wouldnt be one if it was a Bruin injured that way instead of a Hab.

Charles P. Pierce of the Boston Globe:

There is one good thing to come out of the NHL's abdication of its duty to protect people like Max Pacioretty yesterday. That is – the fans of the Boston Bruins now have lost forever any right to complain that "the league" is out to get their team, and that the Montreal Canadiens have some kind of pull inside the NHL home office. That Zdeno Chara got a complete pass on what he did obviates that talking point forever.

Joe Thornton is being ridiculous. Everyone knows the league's only agenda is to screw the Devils any chance they get.
