SHARKS' THORNTON SAYS BRUINS GET FAVOURABLE CALLS FROM NHL

As players from around the league continue to voice their opinions on Zdeno Chara's hit on Max Pacioretty, San Jose Sharks centre Joe Thornton has taken a different angle in his most recent comments.

Speaking to the Globe and Mail, the usually-reserved Thornton suggested that Chara's club, the Boston Bruins, tends to receive favourable treatment from the NHL when it comes to discipline matters.

"It's just something with Boston," Thornton told the Globe and Mail. "It just seems like they have a horseshoe. We've seen the [Milan] Lucic cross-check to the head [of Maxim Lapierre] earlier, and there's no disciplinary thing."

Thornton was once a member of the Bruins, after being drafted first overall by Boston in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. The Bruins traded Thornton to San Jose in 2005.

"It's just something about Boston and the disciplinary [process] is on their side. I'm not sure why that is. I'm not assuming that Colin [Campbell]'s kid is on the team and that's why, but it's really bizarre."

Campbell, the NHL's vice-president of hockey operations, was not involved in reviewing the Chara hit because of the conflict of interest the case presents since his son Gregory plays for the Bruins.

Everyone thinks everyone else has some theory/edge. I like that more guys are speaking out about it. **homer moment alert, please avert eyes if not prepared** Of course when Sid spoke out after his injury, many deemed it whining (not on this board per say, just in general).

Sabres' defenseman Steve Montador was watching his ex-teammate Zdeno Chara Tuesday night play against the Montreal Canadiens and like most hockey fans, was stunned by the hit that Chara laid on Max Pacioretty of the Montreal Canadiens.
"I was pretty scared and shocked for Max. You knew he was caught in a vulnerable position.” Montador said that Chara is a
physical guy but not a dirty player and goes on the ice with the idea "that he is the biggest and strongest guy in the league....and he probably is."

The conversation quickly turned to Montador's opinion of the NHL's decision not to suspend Chara. "You are pretty familiar with the ice and I think he hit him the way he wanted to but surely did not want the outcome." The Sabres defenseman went on to say that he was surprised that the NHL did not hand down extra punishment. "I thought he might have just due to the injury. I think it was a pretty serious enough situation that something should have been done."

It goes every which way. There's no favoritism, just wild inconsistency.

The honorable thing for Campbell to do is to step aside in what is obviously a conflict of interest. That would be a start.
And I felt this way and posted my thoughts on this well before Tuesday night.

I agree that having a kid in the league he shouldnt have his position, but he has no say in matters regarding the Bruins.

I must say, it is nice to see players speaking out, I think a lot of their opinions are full of cocky, and it shouldn't have taken this long for people to speak out. There were many worse hits prior to this one that should have set the alarm off in players' heads. I also think that people are focusing on the wrong point here, instead of attacking the league on why Chara was not suspended, they should be focusing on mandatory guidelines each rink must accustom to for the players safety.

Also, Air Canada could suck a dick. Where were they on the Marc Savard hit? Where were they on the Bergeron hit? Where were they on the Crosby hit? Oh, thats right, because it is precious Montreal. Give me a break.

This is ridiculous in my opinion. I mean, this hit had a horrifying result, but the actual act, most can agree, wasn't malicious. It was an unfortunate hit, slightly irresponsible, but it wasn't barbaric in any sense (other than Chara's nose). I think they're using this as some sort of marketing ploy to get more Habs fans to trust them as their flying company. It's dumb. Just as dumb as the police getting involved.

i see that HSedin called out Chara

"I'll tell you this: if you say that you don't know where things are around the ice, I think you're not telling the truth," Sedin said. "You play the game for 20 years, you know it's there. It's gotten to the point, you have to suspend guys if you hit the head. You have to do it even if guys say they didn't mean to do it or it's an accident. You have to start somewhere.

"What are you doing to do the next time Trevor Gillies(notes) comes down and runs a guy into the thing? You can't give him anything. And you tell the guys [Chara] has no history, so the next time he does it he still has no history because he didn't get suspended. I don't see the reasoning behind it. Give him at least something to show that's not acceptable."

there have been so many different opinions on this from players ... if they cant figure it out ... how can we as fans wrap our head around it

Just my opinion, but accountability should take priority over intent. I don't know if Chara's intent was malicious, but he should be held accountable for his actions putting a guy on the shelf for who knows how long. Accidents happen in everyday life to people with no intent of causing harm, but they are usually held accountable regardless.

The history part really stands out to me. I've thought that many times, because clearly that holds too much water within the disciplinary process. Every time a situation arises in which a suspension may be necessary that comes up. With the amount of times it's mentioned by the NHL and the big-wigs it makes me think that's all they see when they watch replays. Justice shouldn't be about who, but what. If they were given a play that they had never seen, with player numbers, names, teams, removed from the equation, life would be much easier. Intent is one thing, but it's really about watching the play and making sure it wasn't illegal in any sense.
