you need to toughen up if someone standing nearby is fucking up your swing that much.

Some people do. I played once when on vacation at Bear’s Best near Atlantla, and had a dude in the group who was obsessive, border paranoia, about players standing behind him, lol. Fun course BTW, holes copied from other ones he’s designed around the world.

If I can see you in my peripheral vision when I'm staring down at my ball, you're in the wrong place. Never stand directly behind someone's line while they're hitting is very basic etiquette... unless they ask you to to watch their ball flight or something.

I played with Vijay Singh earlier this year. On the very first hole he stood two feet from my ball teeing off. He loves gamesmanship and knew it would make me nervous and having just met him he knew I wouldn’t ask him to back off lol. All I saw was my ball and his feet.

It is very poor etiquette, especially in tournament play. It’s an unsaid rule in golf you don’t stand directly behind a player during a shot or putt. It’s very distracting. You can poke fun all you want, but there’s a reason at the highest level of the game the best players in the world don’t do this. So if you wanna call the elite players of the game mentally soft about this rule, you’re on an island in your thinking.

Tell that to the NBA player trying to make a free throw with everyone behind the basket screaming and waving and a player standing directly behind him and you'll get laughed out of the building.

I’m not saying the best golfers in the world can’t handle it. I’m saying it’s etiquette not to distract a fellow player though. In an environment when there’s usual quiet and stillness, sudden sounds and movements become distracting because you don’t expect them. Same thing would apply to your scenario above if NBA crowds were like golf crowds. And let’s say it was extremely customary you shoot a quiet free throw 99% of the time. Well that 1% somebody distracts you it would have a greater affect because you’re not expecting it. When the crowd waves their hands and the free throw shooter is expecting it, it’s nowhere near as distracting because their brain is already subject to it and expecting their distractions.

Some of the A holes at our club take it to extreme and stare across the fairway at people making the slightest noise or cry about someone they see out of the corner of their eye while putting. I laugh at them. It seems they think this makes them look like pros when it only makes them look like fools. Most of them can't even carry my clubs but none of those noises or movement bothers me in the least. We play with music going and we all laugh and talk smack to each other. As long as you don't shout something in the middle of my swing, I'm good.
Instead of making you look like a player it makes you look mentally weak...............in my opinion.

I used to play with an assclown who stood behind other players on the tee box when they were teeing off. It is very distracting because if he moves at all your eyes and head automatically pick up his movement and it causes problems. We asked him many times not to do it but he thought it was bullcrap.
He also carried 15 clubs in his bag, would ground his club in the bunker, and release the cart brake in your downswing....should'a just whipped his ass and been done with him. But it's a gentlemans sport,...right?

He was the GM where I worked...we were good friends actually so he took exception with the rules......was kinda hard to call him out, but we did on occasion. He just laughed it off like the rules didn't apply to him.......

Had a chance to play with some members at Augusta National and was so looking forward to it but they also felt the rules didn't apply to them. Just a bunch of complete shitbirds except for the guy who invited me. It was all I could do to keep my mouth shut.

Standing nearby ain't the problem. It's the movement, or anticipation, of his movement, that is the problem.
And since I had to 'splain it to ya, then you obviously either don't play, or aren't worth a crap when you do play.
It bothers many people, or there wouldn't be a thread about it, or a quote from Paige S.

You prolly shoot a 100+ so I get it....you can't blame anyone else's actions for your shitty game, but if your worth your salt and maybe have some swag on the game, then peeps shouldn't play mind games like that.

1000% agree and I hate those golfers. Like when I’m perfectly still, and you ask me to still move I’m like GTFO. Those kinds of guys are the worst and I’ll won’t play with them again.

I don’t care if you even talk while I’m hitting as long as the conversation was started before I address the ball I’m cool. I only get annoyed if somebody is standing too close in any direction. Other than that I’m hard to even bother. I just like ready golf and playing fast.

Yeah the cheating thing was weird. Long story short, he was cited for cheating in a South African tour event and the media never got his side of the story. Then when he made the pga tour a journalist wrote a really bad piece about him. He’s never really spoke to the media since. He feels they’re manipulative (which they are) so he doesn’t give them the time of day. No journalist knows much about him because he shuts them out. But I’ve met him on 3 occasions and played three times with him this year. He’s an absolute great guy to be around.

Depends upon what kind of game you want to play. Not standing in someone's line is no different than not shouting during their backswing. It's basic etiquette. But if you want to be an asshole I can play that too.

Exactly. If it is a lesson, that's one thing. Competitive play, you don't get in the line of sight. However, the player also needs to let someone know politely if they are doing something that's messing with them. "Can you move a little to the left".
