Patriots' Julian Edelman: Bouncing back from foot surgery
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Though Julian Edelman underwent surgery on his left foot this offseason, the wideout is reportedly on track to be ready for training camp, ESPN.com reports.

Per the report, Edelman was recently spotted in New York City sporting a "big boot" on his foot, after undergoing what is described as a "cleanup procedure" that is not expected to affect his status for the coming season. In the absence of any setbacks, Edelman is set to reprise his role as the New England Patriots ' top receiver in 2016, with Danny Amendola and Chris Hogan next up in the team's wideout pecking order.

When you’re a player like Julian Edelman, you rely a lot on your feet.

What he lacks in size and strength, Edelman has always made up for in speed and quickness and it’s turned him into one of the Patriots’ most valuable assets in their offense. It’s one of his strengths, having pulled off a ridiculous 3.92 seconds in his shuttle run at his pro day (a current Patriots team best) while using those gifts to quietly come into his own as one of the top receivers in the game. Watching him break in and out of routes with his foot speed is one of the things that makes him so dangerous and drives defenders crazy, and it’s also what makes him great.

So it was no wonder that when he broke his foot against the Giants in week 10 last season that the red flags went up wondering about whether or not he’d be healthy enough in the playoffs to really contribute the way he’s normally used to.

After missing the remaining seven weeks, Edelman came back after the bye in the postseason against Kansas City and played well, leading the team with 10 receptions for 100 yards during their 27-20 win to advance to the AFC Championship game. After the game he was spotted going to the x-ray room, although he denied he needed them.

“Everyone’s sore,” Edelman said via ESPN following the contest. “I finished the game and feel good enough to get ready to prepare for next week.”

He played in 80-of-83 snaps in Denver the following week, although he looked severely hampered by the end of the contest and it was obvious that he wasn’t quite right. He struggled to get separation against the Broncos’ secondary, who smelled blood and went after him.

“They were putting guys in the right place and using two and cutting guys over here,” said Edelman, who had a noticeable limp after the game. “They had a good gameplan.”

It’s nearly impossible to shut Edelman down, and it was a frustrating end to a comeback bid that he’s still in the middle of. Initial reports following the loss at the end of February had Edelman “recovering well” but that he wasn’t sure that he would need additional surgery. On Wednesday, ESPN reported that Edelman indeed needed surgery after being spotted over the weekend in a walking boot (one of our own members actually posted this on our message board on Saturday), but is expected to be ready by the beginning of training camp. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network followed up that report saying that the procedure Edelman underwent was “minor”, and involved having the screw reinserted from his original procedure.

Hopefully his recovery remains on track, because past players with foot issues haven’t fared very well. Aaron Dobson fell into that category after breaking his foot late into his rookie year and it hampered him into the next season and he hasn’t been the same since, while Brandon LaFell also suffered a foot injury during the offseason after their Super Bowl win that put him on PUP to begin 2015 and he was never the same either, making his final year in New England a forgettable one.

Training camp is almost 2.5 months away at this point and how Edelman handles the time leading up and during camp is going to be critical. As we know, his value to the offense can’t be overstated and it’s going to be important to make sure that his drive to get back doesn’t turn him into his own worst enemy as he looks to avoid any further setbacks.

As a result, it’s certainly a situation that will need to be monitored over the coming months. Edelman is no stranger to beating the odds, and hopefully despite Wednesday’s news, he’ll end up faring better than his fellow receivers as he continues his recovery.

He's supposed to be 100% ready for the start of training camp.......9 weeks. If he's not healed in 9 nine weeks, he has more and a screw loose.

From what I heard, the screw that was removed was first inserted immediately after the laser fusion was completed. The foot got kicked in the AFCCG and actually caused Edelman to limp. He was limping after the game and saw a doctor right away. He was told to stay off it as much as possible and give it time to rest. Apparently the original screw was loosened. The surgery last week replaced the original screw with a permanent titanium screw that will actually bond to the bone. The monster boot is to keep the foot from flexing. They don't want any pressure on that screw for at least two weeks in order to allow the bonding to begin.

I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last month and have a better understanding of Orthopedic Surgery.

well, all I can say is Lafell was supposed to be back for camp...nope.....Dobson was supposed to be back for camp, nope. Seems this team has a history of waiting a little to long for surgery. This might explain why all the WR were brought in. I can def see him starting the season on PUP, and I will plan for that. Hope I am wrong....

I agree with you on this. It does appear that they really play the "wait and see" approach and then it's too late and players miss more time then they should have.

Owners and coaches rarely have an MD after their names. They can dictate the way many things are done, but, nary a one of them will go against a doctor who tells any athlete what he recommends. Hence, James Andrews MD says wait a week and I'll recheck your shoulder, everyone waits a week and hopes the week doean't mean surgery. Edelman was told to get off the foot and rest it. Did he get off the foot and rest it? I don't know and neither do any of the posters in here. My guess is that he got off the foot for a week or two and everything appeared to be fine.................................................

Then Brady blew the conch and both Edelman and Amendola showed up in California to play catch with him. That's where I think Edelman found out that the foot had a problem. Got second opinion and put the foot back on the hasack and waited for the MRIs to be reviewed. The pictured showed that there was some minor clean up needed and when they checked the screw, they found it was loose. The rest is history.

I don't blame anyone for this, it was just a series of events and activity. If Brady hadn't had the passing workouts and Edelman had gone to camp with a loose screw in his foot, would he have missed the entire year or just 12 games? We'd all be pissed because some media guy would have found an obscure MD in East Bum Fuck, who would have put the blame squarely on Belichick and 95% of all football fans would have called for a lynching.

Maybe signing Amendola to a cap friendly deal (at least for this season) is BB's way of saying he is also not taking it for granted that Edelman will be fully ready for the start of the season.

Chris Hogan could end up being a very useful signing.

My wife is recovering from a broken bone in foot. I have done a lot of studying about this injury because I'm considering a malpractice suit. Seems that a "cleanup" surgery is common - maybe even expected.
Along with the broken bone, there is often tendon damage. The tendon will "callous over" to heal.
When callousing over, the tendon will develop calcification and this will result in arthritis. Additionally, the scar tissue that develops often "heals" the bone to the surrounding tissue. This causes pain. The doctor has to wait for all this to play out before the 2nd surgery.....

Not to mention, the foot heals the slowest of any part of the body.

Interesting talk yesterday. Dez Bryant had similar surgery to Edelman's last year and it took him 4 months to get back on the field. If Edelman follows the same path, he will NOT be ready for Week 1. Most likely he'd be back Week 3 OR 4.

Assuming everyone else are healthy week one I'm not too worried. Give JE some more time to rest. He takes an annual beating out there. NE has enough weapons especially with Marty Bennett onboard. It will also be interesting to see what WRs and RBs make the squad? Possibly IR JE bring him back after week 6 ready to go on a long run thru the POs:hope:

I'm guessing you mean the PUP list. If he is on the IR designated to return list starting in week one then he can't return to action until 8 weeks in. PUP list though a player can start practicing 6 weeks into the season and then the team has a 5 week window of whether to activate the player and once activated have 21 days to decide if they are healthy enough to play.

No problem. Hard to keep all the terms straight and what actually happens with them. Seems like about every other year they change the rules for them.

My wife reminds me everyday that I have that disease. I don't remember that she has told me everyday but everyday she tells me she has told me it everyday.
