This is from Ken Berger of CBSSPORTS

With the Lakers hoping for a swift decision from Dwight Howard on his free agency this summer, the All-Star center has given no indication he will rush the process and has privately indicated that he plans to give strong consideration to multiple teams, league sources told CBSSports.com.

Though Howard is adamant that his free agency not be marred by the circus-like environment that surrounded his departure from Orlando last summer, word already has spread to multiple levels of his support staff that Howard re-signing with the Lakers is far from a done deal.
With six weeks to go before Howard becomes an unrestricted free agent, the team that is said to intrigue him the most is the Houston Rockets, according to multiple people briefed on internal conversations surrounding Howard's free-agent decision. The Rockets have a young star, James Harden, who has proved himself worthy of playing the leading role for the franchise; a budding 3-point shooting threat in Chandler Parsons; a defensive-minded coach in Kevin McHale; and Omer Asik, the kind of 7-footer Howard is believed to want next to him in the frontcourt.

The Rockets are a couple of minor moves away from having room to sign Howard; they have a team option on Francisco Garcia's $6.4 million and Carlos Delfino's $3 million is fully non-guaranteed, for example. If they chose to or needed to make a trade to create room, they have numerous attractive young players on tradable contracts, such as 2012 No. 5 pick Thomas Robinson. Such assets could be moved to a team or teams under the cap to create room or packaged in a possible sign-and-trade with LA -- if the Lakers became convinced that Howard would leave and they'd receive nothing in return.

The Mavericks represent another franchise that intrigues Howard, and Dallas is a minor transaction or two away from having enough room to sign Howard outright as an unrestricted free agent. Howard plans to explore all such options, and a person briefed on his plans told CBSSports.com that there are "several" teams the free-agent center is "going to take a hard look at."

In short: Let the Dwightmare begin. Again.

If I'm Dwight my decision is easy. I'm going to Houston to play with another young star in James Harden. Harden unlike Kobe still has not reached his prime and also is not 1 or 2 years away from retiring.

The only reason Dwight should stay in LA is hoping that they sign a big name FA in 2014 but it is a big gamble because if they don't he will be screwed.

If he wants to be assured that he will be making deep runs in the playoffs he should make the right move and sign with Houston.

How does the article explain Dallas being a few minor moves from being able to sign a max contract? Dallas has more than enough room already.

Nothing here is really new news.

There is no advantage for Howard to stay in L.A. And at the end of the day he will actually earn more salary by leaving. The Lakers will agree to a sign and trade. There is no state income tax in Texas. Do the math.

Anyway, where are the hypocrite James haters/Lakers fans who ripped James for leaving his team hanging heading into FA?

When will this dumbshit line of thinking cease?

Just ask yourself one thing: In all of sports, when was the last time you heard an athlete say that he was going to play in Texas, Florida, etc. because of the state income tax structure?

Not even that. NAME for me all the high end FAs that signed with Dallas, ever.......

Yeah, I couldn't come up with any either, and I'm a Mavs fan.

Why would any player need to say it? Point is, it counters any debate that he would stay in L.A. because his salary would be more there.

If winning is Howard's priority, then he better put a whole lot of thought into this decision. He is not a leader or even really a true number 1 option because he can't be trusted with the ball in game winning situation. With Houston, he would inherit Harden and a young core of up and coming players. Seems like the smartest move for him IMO.

It is completely possible that Dwight will sign somewhere other then Los Angeles. Let's look at the scenarios:

Dallas - Comes with Dirk Nowitzki who is one of the best 3 point shooters in the NBA and is deadly with the 3 point shot. Upside is Dirk is willing to sign for less money and Dallas has plenty of money. Downside - Could take several years before becomng a contender. Championship teams don't get built in one season, but Cuban is smart and cares for his players

Houston - Has one championships but has been awhile and Hardin would be one hell of a combo like Shaq and Kobe was, but again - that's not enough to win a championship.

Lakers - I still think this is the best place for Howard because he will have Kobe and even a diminished Kobe could be enough. A healthy Gasol and Nash could make them contenders now that Dumbtoni has given up on the 7 seconds or less running team. The downside is that the Lakers season this first year with Howard did not create a good first impression.

Dwight shouldn't sign with Dallas unless another star is coming with him. Signing with Dallas alone will basically be the same as signing with LAL because Dirk like Kobe is only going to be playing ball for a few more years.

Dwight's best shot at winning a championship would be with the Lakers for next season assuming he believes that the injuries were a fluke and he also understands that if that didn't work that in 2014 the Lakers will build completely around him. The Lakers has a better history of building championship teams considering that they have something like 10 in the last 22 years. No other team in any major sports has that many in the last 22 years, not even the Yankees. In order to beat that record you have look at the last 50 years of teams who have had atleast two or more owners in that span of time

Rockets would be instant scary with healthy vintage motivated Dwight. The problem with LA is that they have a diminishing Kobe and Kobe doesn't seem the type to take a pay cut or diminished role to go with his diminished skill set. Kobe is still really good but he is not what he was.

You do not hear that because players usually do not discuss their tax strategies publicly. Players do usually own houses in those places to skirt income tax but I believe that they must live there most of the year to qualify. This could prove difficult for some players or people who just prefer to live in one place. There may also be a stipulation on where you earned the money.

Except Dirk is going to take a huge pay cut so Dallas has FA invincibility and Mark Cuban is a great and dedicated owner who will do what it takes to win. (barring his lack of basketball dedication last year, but sharktank was probably one of the things he does to be able to pay his players.)

I gotta agree with TLF for the sole reason that the Lakers have a proven commitment to building a winning franchise. That being said will the idiot savant Buss have that same dedication now that his pops has passed? DHoward in Houston would be nice. Him and Harden together would be great.

Lakers don't have a first round pick until 2015, so that's not going to happen.

The only way they're going to rebuild is when all the salaries come off the books in 2014, and if Kobe retires.
