Significant non-Giants drafted...

Evan Longoria (1-3)
Clayton Kershaw (1-7)
Max Scherzer (1-11)
Ian Kennedy (1-21)
Chris Davis (5-12)
Doug Fister (7-201)
Justin Turner (7-204)
Brandon Belt (11-343 DNS Red Sox)
Daniel Murphy (13-394)
Josh Reddick (17-523)
Paul Goldschmidt (49-1452 DNS Dodgers)
Jarrod Dyson (50-1475)!!!

Giants Picks...

1-10 Tim Lincecum MLB debut 5/6/2007

2-Time Cy Young winner
3-Time World Series Champion
2 No-Hitters
4-Time top 10 Cy Young
3-Time Strikeout King

Timmeh changed the culture with the Giants. It was only a few years removed from "The Barry Show", and Timmeh signaled the change in team strategy from bashers to pitching and defense. He didn't last long, but he did accumulate 100 wins and 1700 Ks as a Giant. He will not go into the HOF, therefore his 55 will never go on the wall, but along with 22, no one SHOULD ever wear that number again.

1-33 Manny Burriss MLB debut 4/20/2008

Was the opening day 2B in 2009. But it was 2009, so that is hardly a feather in his cap. Basically, it would be a compliment to call him a meh utility player during his time with the Giants.

7-206 Brett Pill MLB debut 9/6/2011

Kind of a poor-mans Brandon Belt. The Giants ended up selling him to a Korean team in 2014. He is currently in the Tigers org.

36-1076 Matt Downs MLB debut 6/16/2009

Had one solid year for the Astros, but was basically a very forgettable player.

This was a one-trick-pony draft. But that one trick was impressive.

If you were pulling all guys that were drafted by the Giants in 2006 and made the big leagues, then you forgot these three guys:

6-176 Ryan Rohlinger
9-266 Brian Bocock
19-566 Tyler Graham

If you are going to talk about Burriss and his 2009 OP laurels, you have to talk about Bocock jumping straight from San Jose in 2007 to being the OP shortstop for SF in 2008.

I actually had that written out, but it was just too repetitive on a guy who was essentially a non-factor anyway. Bocock only played because he was a non-prospect. Not because he earned it.

I thought he got the nod due to injuries and his defense. If I remember correctly, the backup to the backup got injured in spring training so Bocock got the call. Plus, it helps remember where the franchise was at just before the amazing 3 title run.

My read on the situation (his getting the call) was that adding him to the 40 would not be a prob since they wouldn't care about losing him when they ended up DFAing him. His glove was MLB quality, but he didn't even bother traveling with a bat. He was given the starting job, not because he earned it, but because he was there.

And his career performance pretty much backs that up.

Not trying to argue with you on his bat. I remember his was an emergency promotion and the reason they even considered it was due to his defense. What's amazing is that he got a 2nd chance with the Phillies in 2010.

Now, the real question is, are you even going to bother reviewing the 2005 draft? My guess is, based on WAR, the Giants had the worst of the 30 teams.

My intention is just continue going back. But I tend to get distracted as I go. I actually WANTED to get to phase two of this draft this past weekend, but I was just too busy.

I also like to have AT LEAST a few days between each phase to encourage any discussion.

I started poking around the 2005 draft list for the Giants and look forward to read what your research looks for that year.
