Thanks, that helps a bunch. I guess I'm still confused on the "why" of it all. If a team loses a player in free agency because another team wanted them more and was willing to pay more, it seems weird that the original team should get compensated for it. The other part that is confusing is the order of the picks. Like, where do the picks come from? There is a set draft order that is determined by where a team finishes, and that order repeats in every round until all the rounds are done. Now Seattle gets 3 more picks that are inserted in some of the later rounds, but that must mean that some other teams are getting bumped back in order to squeeze in Seattle's compensatory picks. It's all confusing, but it is what it is. Thanks for the explanation though.

Well, there could be a number of reasons players leave in free agency. Disgruntled with the team, the team can't afford them, they want to test the market, etc. And sometimes (as we routinely see) teams with a ton of cap can just go hard and throw out stupid money to snag a player. Sometimes it's just unfortunate set of circumstances. It's basically saying, "Look for xyz reasons you lost a good player in free agency. So here's a little something to help." Again these are late 3rd round picks at best.

The picks are effectively awarded by the NFL and given to teams at the END of each round, and the order is again based on the total value given up by the other team signing (on a per player basis). You're correct that other teams get bumped back a bit, but we're 3 handed out in the 3rd round and 4 handed out in the 4th round (there are more than 5 in the 5th, etc.)... and by the END of the 4th round (not as many handed out)... I mean... look I don't work for the NFL but by the time you're getting to the 5th round it's a bit of a crapshoot.

There used to be compensatory I think in mid rounds, but that's no longer the case.

Then of course you have the dumbass JC-2A picks, when minority coaches go to be a head coach... ugh. That stupid ass fuckin' rule. Sadly the 9ers get one because of it (DeMaco Ryans). Rams got one too. That rule is fuckin' bullshit.

My favorite comp picks are when you lose a Non white coach

Yep I just replied to dk in the above post and mentioned the stupid f'ing bullshit JC-2A picks. Sadly the 9ers get one, and those are 3rd rounders. Detroit and the Rams also get one. FML... :L :L :L

Maybe Trump can sign an executive order to force the NFL to ditch that bullshit.

The league is sorta set up to funnel teams to the middle. Have a poor season? Get a better draft pick. Richest owner? There's a salary cap. Had a great season? You're picking at the end of the round. Finished in 1st place? You'll play the other 1st place finishers in your conference next year. Giving teams comp picks helps them replenish talent they've lost to the rest of the league. As more teams sort of collect in the middle of the league, the theory is the games will be more competitive and interesting. This means more viewers and of course more revenue. They are trying to make as much money as possible, after all.

Yep, complete BS. I am actually a bit surprised the league hasn't taken it a step further, such as only requiring 9 yards for a 1st down if you have a black QB. Or you get an extra replay challenge if your HC is black because the refs are probably giving you more bad calls due to "systemic racism" or whatever. Total crock.

And it would just be Seattle's luck they implement the 9 yard 1st down rule after we got rid of Russell and Geno... >.<

11 yards if both QB & HC are whities.

Maybe we could get -1 yards back if we have a white cornerback or runningback? Trade the farm for DeJean?

Love that. There should be some good wide receivers there with the 3rd rounder. But build the trenches. Obviously Jenkins will help if we sign him Monday, but there's still 2 or so holes on the OL, one being tackle. IF Lucas returns great, but that's a big if. The coaches will have better knowledge of how risky he is in 2025.

And then I've been saying on the DL... Reed is 33, D Law is 33, Williams is 31... you need to rotate those guys a bit more or they're gonna break down, and we need to get Murphy off doing nose tackle so much. With EDGE, if Nwosu or D Law can't stay healthy, you're right back to overusing Mafe/Hall again which is why their production I think fell off as the season went on.

What will kind of suck is if everyone on the DL stays healthy (unlike last year) or maybe all but one do, and Mafe has a MONSTER year... because he's in his contract year, lol.

Only other option in the 1st is if Mike has fallen in love with Emmanwori. You could probably trade back with the first, get another 3rd, and use the 3rd to move up in the 2nd to get Donovan Jackson. Emmanwori doesn't lay the lumber like Kam, but he still tackles well, and he's FAR better in coverage than Kam was. Regardless, I'd rather have DL or OL in the 1st. More important IMO and Love/Bryant are 'good enough'... and will be better if we stop the run and pass rush well.
Jenkins would be nice and hopefully that gets done. Philly gave out the blue print on building both lines at the same time. If JS can not figure this out in this draft and both lines fail than it's waste of money bringing in these FA's.
