Why RB? We have 3 good ones on our team right now...

I think we go DE/DT, LB, WR, OL with our first 5... Round 4 and on I think we add depth at TE, CB, Safety, WR, OL, DL

But like we both know, JS always seems to be full of surprises on draft day...

Its starting to feel like Schneider knows he is safe no matter what happens.
So look for a lot of frustrating head scratchers in the draft.
You wanted OL in round one? Nope we are taking a S.
You think we are loaded at RB? Sorry here's one in round 2!
Cmon guys, walker is always injured we need another RB.
The ultimate FU to fans would be trading up to take jeanty

CB in round one would send me into a coma

DL/EDGE, OL, or QB in round 1. And I prob. wont grade any QB favorably in round 1... but hey, it's the most important position in sports.. at least I can get behind wasting (probably would be the case) picks on that position.

I swear if we go TE/WR or DB in the first round I'm gonna lose it as well.

I've already got a few people on the forum to consider pulling my life support.

Ideally I would like

1.18 OL or DL
R2 DL or OL depending on what happens in R1
R2 OL or Edge
R3 WR or LB
R3 S or WR or LB depending on what happens with the first pick of R3

Love that. There should be some good wide receivers there with the 3rd rounder. But build the trenches. Obviously Jenkins will help if we sign him Monday, but there's still 2 or so holes on the OL, one being tackle. IF Lucas returns great, but that's a big if. The coaches will have better knowledge of how risky he is in 2025.

And then I've been saying on the DL... Reed is 33, D Law is 33, Williams is 31... you need to rotate those guys a bit more or they're gonna break down, and we need to get Murphy off doing nose tackle so much. With EDGE, if Nwosu or D Law can't stay healthy, you're right back to overusing Mafe/Hall again which is why their production I think fell off as the season went on.

What will kind of suck is if everyone on the DL stays healthy (unlike last year) or maybe all but one do, and Mafe has a MONSTER year... because he's in his contract year, lol.

Only other option in the 1st is if Mike has fallen in love with Emmanwori. You could probably trade back with the first, get another 3rd, and use the 3rd to move up in the 2nd to get Donovan Jackson. Emmanwori doesn't lay the lumber like Kam, but he still tackles well, and he's FAR better in coverage than Kam was. Regardless, I'd rather have DL or OL in the 1st. More important IMO and Love/Bryant are 'good enough'... and will be better if we stop the run and pass rush well.

I love that we get 3 compensatory picks, but I've never really understood the concept of compensatory picks. Why do we get these picks?

Compensatory picks are awarded to teams that lose players in free agency to another team. Releasing a player who is signed by a different team does not count. And trading a player does not count. So Seattle would not get a compensatory pick for DK or Geno when they resign.

They range from 3rd to 7th round and are based on the contract value awarded to the player. There are a limited number of picks. So a team that lets someone walk in free agency who signs to another team for like $2M... you're not getting anything. For example, Minnesota because they did not RELEASE Sam Darnold, and Seattle signed him to a $100M/$33M per will prob. get a 3rd round compensatory because he is the highest paid contract. Fries will prob. also get a 3rd rounder... These picks are awarded the following year after free agency. So it would be a 2026 pick. Not as good as a trade to acquire capital this year, etc.

Now, on that point, it's interesting with Minnesota. They let Darnold go who will likely get a 3rd round compensatory, BUT they also acquired Fries... who they paid $85M or so I believe... what happens in that case is the compensatory they get CANCELS out the compensatory because they acquired a player of close to equal value. For example this year, because we grabbed I think it was Dodson, it canceled out one of our compensatory picks (I think in the 5th).

Compensatory picks are supposed to help teams losing guys in free agency so it doesn't get too lopsided. However, in the case of something like Minnesota, well, yes you lost a player paid quite a bit, but you also signed one who got paid quite a bit, so we're going to null out the 3rd round compensatory you would've received had you not signed Fries.

And edit: for example the 4th rounder we got was for Damien Lewis who signed a pretty sizeable contract with Carolina.

Thanks, that helps a bunch. I guess I'm still confused on the "why" of it all. If a team loses a player in free agency because another team wanted them more and was willing to pay more, it seems weird that the original team should get compensated for it. The other part that is confusing is the order of the picks. Like, where do the picks come from? There is a set draft order that is determined by where a team finishes, and that order repeats in every round until all the rounds are done. Now Seattle gets 3 more picks that are inserted in some of the later rounds, but that must mean that some other teams are getting bumped back in order to squeeze in Seattle's compensatory picks. It's all confusing, but it is what it is. Thanks for the explanation though.
