Doc (I think) asked a question the other day...Sandoval will get the call before Ryder Jones and it will be hilariously sad.
Doc (I think) asked a question the other day...
Should the Giants call up Ryder now that he is hot and give him the job or should they play Hwang for a month non-stop?
I am of the opinion that Hwang should get an extended look. The Giants need to make a decision on him now. Jones does not need to play now. And Jones looked B.A.D. when he was up. Let him gain some confidence for a bit first.
None of this, though, answers the Pable question. He has an out in his contract if he is not on the 40 (and thus in SF since he has no options) by the end if the year. You have to figure the org will want the big return story at some point, so he WILL be added, at least in September, and likely at the expense of Moncrief. But that will take ABs away from Hwang, Jones and Arroyo. All bad options.
I used to think that Chase Johnson would be 60 day'd a while ago but as some have pointed out on this board, the Giants tend to not do that. Rather, they dfa those guys with the intent of keeping them in the farm (i.e. Strickland, Black(?) and Gardeck). So I think Chase may be the first 40 man casualty. That doesn't mean that Moncrief will be around come September. I think the Giants will bring up a pitcher or two in September not already on the 40 man roster (like Snelton and Rogers) in addition to Sandoval. And if they decide to bring up Shaw, then there is a 3rd spot that needs to be opened. Which leads me to ask, are we going to see Michael Morse again? Its been awfully quiet on his front and he only got injured in that melee with Samardzija. What are the chances he goes to the 60 day? The team quietly slipped him from the 7 day to the 10 day a while ago.Ryder has been playing RF a lot since he has come back from injury. He was peppering in some LF/1B before he was called up, but still mostly 3B. I wouldn't be that mad if he stays down and just plays RF/LF the rest of the season and comes into 2018 with a mindset that he can have a job. I still think his ceiling is a solid utility player, a more useful Conor Gillaspie. If he shows enough that he can play 4 positions, and keeps hitting, he'll have a place.
I've been thinking a lot about this Moncreif move, and honestly I think it's more of a way to clear up some PT for the group of OFers we have in AAA. Carlos is not really part of the future, but they want to make sure the guys who might be are getting consistent PT. They aren't going to get it in SF, as long as Pence and Span are on the roster, they'll play as much as they can, and Gorkys has been pulling on Bochy's heartstrings so he's playing as much as possible. So call up Moncreif, take him out of the equation in AAA, let Shaw, Mac, and Ryder, and to an extent Bernard, Parker and Calixte, get all they can handle in the OF. It's not perfect, but that's why I'm telling myself so I can sleep at night.
So how this answers your question, basically yeah I think Hwang will get an extended look, though as a platoon mate with Gonor. Both guys are probably set up to fail unfortunately, which will clear the way for Pablo.
Also, I think there is a chance that Parker gets activated here soon (the clock is ticking), and my hope is that Gonor is DFA'd, Miguel Gomez steals his PT, and Parker becomes the lefty PH for awhile, not because I particularly like Parker that much, but I'd rather have him around than Gonor. More likely though, Moncreif is DFA'd, or Gomez is sent down and Chase Johnson is 60-day'd.

So why are the Giants wasting a 40 man roster spot on him? If he is effectively retired, just release him! That is ridiculous.Yeah the thing about placing them on the 60-day DL vs. DFA'ing them is if they DFA him, they can save an option year on him, but risk losing him on the open market. The 1st time Garden was hurt, back in SJ, I think the 60-day'd him at one point, fearing they would lose him. The 2nd time though, they DFA'd him. Guess it all depends on the market. Johnson is close enough to the bigs where I could see a team taking a shot.
As for Morse, he's done. He went back home to Miami. I forgot that he could be used as a 60-day option too.

That makes more sense. I do believe that MLB doesn't allow teams to release injured players, so it would be good for the team to just move him to the 60 day when Parker gets activated (which has to be soon, I believe today is day 18 of his 20 day rehab assignment).I edited it to explain.
I'm not sure that Morse needs to be activated to be released now. The Nationals released Chris Heisey today, after putting him on the 10 day disabled list 7 days ago. No activation, just a straight release. Since the Giants transferred Morse from the 7 day to the 10 day disabled list a while back, I would guess that the concussion protocol wouldn't be required for a straight release.Yeah the thing about placing them on the 60-day DL vs. DFA'ing them is if they DFA him, they can save an option year on him, but risk losing him on the open market. This from COTS:
Seven-Day Disabled List for Concussions
10-Day Disabled List
- Beginning with the 2011 season, a player who suffers a concussion may be placed on a seven-day disabled list, with a designated club specialist submitting a detailed report, including medical information and video of how the injury occurred, to Major League Baseball’s medical director. The seven-day list may not be used for players with injuries other than a concussion.
- A player on the seven-day disabled list does not count against the 25-man active roster but continues to count against the 40-man roster. A player may be activated — with approval of the designated club specialist and MLB’s medical director — beginning Day 8. If the player is not reinstated by Day 14, he automatically is transferred to the 15-day disabled list.
- A player on the 10-day disabled list does not count against the 25-man active roster but continues to count against the 40-man roster. There is no limit to the number of players a club may put on the 10-day disabled list. A player may be activated beginning Day 11, though the club is not required to reinstate him at any specific time. The 10-day term replaced the 15-day disabled list with the 2017-21 CBA.
- A player may be transferred from the 10-day list to the 60-day list, but the opposite is not permitted. If a player is transferred, his time on the 10-day list is credited toward the minimum stay on the 60-day list.
Marco taught me well. Although, being able to answer these questions means he won't post here as much, it would seem. Thanks, Marco, I mean, LHG!
