In regards to protection, there's a few names that will need the Giants seriously thinking about shielding form the Rule 5. They are:

Pitchers: Tyler Beede, Sam Coonrod, Matthew Gage, Jordan Johnson, Rodolfo Martinez, Tyler Rogers, DJ Snelton; Catchers: Aramis Garcia; Infielders: none; Outfielders: Gustavo Cabrera, Hunter Cole, Dylan Davis

Those are just the top names of who would be eligible to get drafted from other teams this December.
I think it is time to do an analysis of the 2018 roster...

I would definitely keep:

Beede
Garcia
Snelton

I would consider keeping:

Coonrod - iffy. Has not been a great starter. Doesn't really have a secondary pitch.
Gage - meh
Martinez (he has been hurt this year, and really struggled at Richmond) If he isn't protected, I doubt any team would pick him up.
Rogers (his work intrigues, but he may not be well suited to MLB)

Cole is a no power/no speed OF
Davis has done little past one good half season in San Jose
Cabrera (not sure he is eligible. He was signed before he was 19, and has only played four seasons (needs 5))

To consider:

Stetson Woods (is he eligible? Hasn't really moved through the system.)

Players who were signed when they were 19 or older and have played in professional baseball for four years are eligible, as are players who were signed at 18 and have played for five years.

All players on a Major League Baseball team's 40-man roster, regardless of other eligibility factors, are "protected" and ineligible for the Rule 5 Draft.

I believe Cabrera is eligible because a season still counts even if he didn't play due to injury. Stetson Woods will be eligible as well. I didn't think he was worthy of the list I gave. Cabrera, Cole and Davis seemed to be the best of the non-catching position players, so I added them. Otherwise, it looks like another year of the Giants adding a bunch of pitchers and one position player (Garcia).
I do hope that Rogers at least gets a cup of coffee next month. He deserves that. See what he can do.

Woods definitely has 1 more year because he was 18 at the time of signing.

Garrett Williams pitched 6 innings, 5 hits, 3 walks, no runs, and 10 K's in his debut in San Jose today.

Exciting stuff from Williams.

Very similar profile to Matt Krook, throws a fastball in the low 90s with a ton of sinking//tailing movement, and a really good breaking ball (Krook has 2, but has no clue where they're going), both lefty. Neither guy threw many strikes in college, but Williams has had a better start in that regard since turning Pro. The Giants have loaded up on these mid round lotto tickets in recent drafts.

Wednesday 8/2

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

Sacramento River Cats (AAA) were off

Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA) WON 7-5 in 11.

Aramis Garcia 1-5, threw out a runner at 2nd. AA debut
Hunter Cole 1-3, 3B, 2 BB, 2 RBI, 2 R.
Brandon Bednar 2-4, 3 RBI.

Dillon McNamara 2.0-4-4-4-4-1
Carlos Alvarado 3.0-2-1-1-1-3
Vic Black 1.2-1-0-0-3-1
Jarret Martin 1.0-0-0-0-0-1
Cody Hall 2.0-1-0-0-1-4
Tyler Cyr 1.0-1-0-0-0-1

San Jose Giants (A+) WON 3-0

Bryan Reynolds 2-4, HR (6), 1 RBI, 1 R. 9 game hit streak, 17 of 18 games with hits. Up to .316/.362/.455 on the season, batting .334/.376/.485 since May 2nd. His K rate is still a bit high for the type of hitter he should be, sitting at 20%, but it's not outrageous. There's an opening in the outfield in AA with Heathcott moving up....

Mark Melancon 1.0-1-0-0-0-1
Garrett Williams 6.0-5-0-0-3-10
Will LaMarche 1.0-1-0-0-0-0
Dylan Rheault 1.0-0-0-0-0-1

Overall a fun day game in San Jose. Got to see a dominating pitching performance, a major leaguer on rehab, and a top prospect rake.

Augusta GreenJackets (A) lost 5-0

For the 2nd straight day.... nothing of note. Quiet bats.

Melvin Adon 5.0-6-3-2-0-4. Though you may look at Adon's body of work and brush him off as nothing, "a 23 year old in Augusta? Never overwhelming numbers?", I get that you would. But you would be wrong. Adon will take the odd path to the big leagues, but he has the stuff to get there. He's still very raw, but making baby steps right now. Unfortunately, he's going to have to make some big steps soon, because he has 1 more year until he's rule 5 eligible. And starting pitchers who can throw 100 in the 7th inning will be snatched up. I think he can take that step.
Jose Morel 1.0-0-0-0-0-0
Jeff Burke 1.0-1-0-0-0-0
Patrick Ruotolo 1.0-3-2-2-1-1

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes
(A-) still enjoying the break

DSL Giants (Rookie) WON 2-0

Marco Gonzalez 6.0-4-0-0-1-6. He's had a big year. Until he comes state-side though, tough to judge. Pitchers with decent breaking balls tend to do well, or extremely high velocity, but IDK what he has.

AZL Giants (Rookie) WALKED OFF 4-3

Seth Corry 4.0-0-0-0-0-4. 4 perfect innings for Corry, only 2 balls got out of the infield. He's been dominant, giving up only 5 hits in 13 innings. Giants' top 3 picks have started well.

Anyone have any idea what's up with Upton? They signed him, moved him to Sacramento, and I think he's played all of one game. I would assume he's injured but they haven't put him on any kind of disabled list.

In the grand scheme of things, not a big issue, just sort of curious.

I heard that he was not feeling 100% after that 1st game and I just assumed that he was placed on the DL with Sacramento and whoever updates the roster for the team website forgot to make that change.

Not likely they forgot, teams take these very seriously. He is hurt though, I heard something was up with his shoulder. He had the hand fracture earlier in the year. Really not sure what going on with him though.

I'm talking about the webmaster. I would assume that the PCL has him listed on the DL but the website has not been updated. Otherwise, he is taking up a roster spot for over a month without any playing time. There's many guys the Giants could sign and put in the roster. Also, that would put the team roster around 27 players if Upton is active.

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

Sacramento River Cats (AAA) lost 4-1

Mac Williamson 2-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, CS (1).
Chris Shaw 1-4, 2B, 3 K. Made a nice play in LF, and missed a homer by mere inches:

Casey Kelly 6.0-6-4-4-2-11. Use to be a huge prospect, ranking as the Red Sox number 1-4 at some points, and a consensus top 30 guy..... in 2010 back when Giants had 2 top 10 guys.
Steven Okert 1.0-1-0-0-0-2. Unfortunately looking like a AAAA pitcher.
Derek Law 1.0-1-0-0-0-2. Has only 1 game out of 16 since getting demoted where he has not allowed at least 1 baserunner. 1.64 WHIP, .297 BAA, His last 3 innings, 6 K's, 2 H, no walks 0.00 ERA.

Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA) WON 6-5, scoring 2 in the top of the 9th.

Daniel Carbonell 3-4, 2B, 1 RBI, 2 R, 2 SB (3).
T.J. Bennett 2-4, 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K. TJ has been racking up those frequent flyer miles. Has a hit in 9 of his last 10 games across 3 different levels in 6 different states.
Hunter Cole 2-4, 2 2B, 1 R, 1 K.
C.J Hinojosa 1-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB (4).
Aramis Garcia 0-5, 1 RBI, 3 K.

Cory Taylor 7.0-9-5-5-1-5
Ryan Halstead 1.0-1-0-0-0-2
Tyler Cyr 1.0-0-0-0-0-2. Cyr just barely breaks the reliever trend so far.

San Jose Giants (A+) WON 10-8

Ryan Howard 4-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 E (17). Sell high?
Bryan Reynolds 2-5, 2 R, 1 K.
Jonah Arenado 3-5, 3B, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R.
Steven Duggar 1-4, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E (2).

Mark Melancon 0.2-4-4-4-0-1
Rodolfo Martinez 0.1-0-0-0-0-0. Good to see Rodolfo back. Had been rehabbing in the AZL
Shaun Anderson 4.0-1-0-0-0-4. The big ticket. Arsenal: 4-seam FB 90-94, Cut FB 88-92, Slider 84-86, Curve 76-80. Inland Empire was no match for him tonight.
David Owen 2.0-1-1-0-1-2
Will LaMarche 1.2-4-3-3-0-2
Dylan Rheault 0.1-0-0-0-0-0
