The Avalanche (39-13-4, 82) have the 1-seed and the Knights (40-14-2, 82) are the 2-seed. It looks kinda goofy to me. 40 wins is more than 39. Shouldn't the Knights be the 1-seed?

The first tie breaker is regulation wins and Colorado leads in that category. So all is well.

It's a system with rules... so yeah, it makes sense.

One can certainly argue that either the point system or overtime losses should not be the measure, but wins should. But that's not the system and all the participants know that.

I don't have strong feelings on it, but I do pine a little bit for when hockey had ties. There's something special about a tie, about judging the combatants as equal on a given night. You can't have it in the playoffs and the drama of the shootout is enjoyable for fans, but there's something romantic about a tie. Not to mention it's mathematical tidiness by comparison to games with differing point values.

The two most memorable athletic events I've ever been a part of as a player were ties back when I played soccer. There was a respect and admiration in the post-game handshake line you just didn't get after a win or a loss.

I have no problem with the current system, but if I were an NHL official (which I definitely am not), I would push for bringing back the tie. That or at least a win in the bank.

Granted, that is stupid on a white background, but looks sharp as hell on dark mode. ;)

So you're saying that something that doesn't make sense from outside does when you apply a particular set of parameters.

Well... seems like you just answered your own question.
