I think they do.

I bought one of those scanner/tuner things for my car when I had it custom tuned. It has a check engine/clear codes feature. I get a code for no cats...

They can do a basic scan.
It will give you a general idea of what is wrong.
It won't pinpoint the problem like a real garage or dealer can.

You might get it right the first time, and it might take two or three tries at it to make it right which gets expensive.

I'd try it and see what comes up.
Is the car acting strange in any way???

Locally, Pep Boys and Autozone will but not O'Reilley. Pep Boys acts like they're doing you a massive favor.

not sure if those places charge or not, but if you look it up on the internet you can usually find out how to determine the codes yourself.

In my old car, you had to turn the key to the on position and back off like 2 times and then back to on and it would cycle through all the codes that were causing your check engine light to be on. Then it was just a matter of looking up those codes.

Mine comes on all the time (Audi) and the dudes at Advanced Auto just give me the scanner and go run/clear the codes.

If you get a code you don't recognize, google it. They'll be tons of info. Especially on a Wrangler.

To fix those pesky warning lights, cover them in black electrical tape. For weird noises, turn up the radio.

Meh, it happens.

Hell, I drove all the way home from the gas station the other day without putting the gas cap on at all. Saw it dangling there in my mirror as I was turning in my driveway. :L

You can always borrow the diagnostic tool from Auto zone and take it home. The deposit is usually the price of the tool but you get it back when you return it.

I just bought one. Went to Autozone and picked up a relatively cheap one for like $40. I've used the hell out of it. Makes it way easier to do a quick diagnosis and then clear any codes. Whenever I change the oil I'll pull codes to see if anything is about to kick over. SOme of those codes need a "has to happen 5 times before it trips" event. I've used it on my cars, friends, neighbors, coworkers. It's one of those relatively cheap and easy to use tools that most people are intimidated by and gets you massive "bad ass" points

In My SHO, I've self read the codes with some sort of paper-clip arrangment that caused dash light to flash the codes in numerical sequences (like a morse code).

But unless it came back faulty O2 sensor or something like that, diagnosis can still be a bitch. Wondering if it's this or that.

I uaually go to Ford and pay them to tell me what's wrong. Then if I can fix it myself I'll try. Otherwise I let the mechanic do it.

dont know if this has anything to do with the check engine light or not, but yesterday afternoon, was leaving work pulled a U turn, and after that had no power steering...after muscling it to the side of the road, i parked turned it off, and back on, and all seems fine again

:wtf:
