They last played in 1986. They were in the Missouri Valley Conference from 1945-85...became an independent for their last season. Judging by their lack of winning seasons I'd guess no.

I saw LSU shock that wheat in 1984! 47-7 IIRC.

They really never fully recovered from their plane crash. They went down a month or so before Marshall in 1970.
But, I believe they were flying in two planes, and not everybody was killed on the first aircraft. I'm pretty sure
they returned to the field a week or two later against Arkansas. I remember TV showing one of their injured
players at the toss of the coin.

I remember their plane crash. That haunted me a kid. I can still visualize the picture on the front page of the Birmingham News.

Wichita St's crash was October 2, 1970 and Marshall's was November 14, 1970. Damn....6 weeks apart.

I never saw the Wheat Shockers play in person or on tv, but I was saddened when they dropped their football program - the same as I was when Xavier (Ohio), Samford, Drake, Long Beach St., College of the Pacific, Santa Clara, UT-Arlington, Lamar, Nebraska-Omaha, Jacksonville U., and many other teams did the same thing.

Drake brought their program back after a year's layoff. It took Samford & Lamar a bit longer. I wish some of those other teams would follow suit - along with the likes of George Washington, Bridgeport, Vermont and Cal. St.-Chico. But the chances of that happening are pretty slim at the moment.
