Bettman is a devious little shit :tsk:

- Canceled the Winter Classic before the players' could use it as leverage.

- Leaked false information to the press about Fehr not providing the whole truth

- Wants a two week no talk zone to extend the pain of another missed paycheck

Daniel Tolensky tweets from last night:

From the NHL Constitution: "The Commissioner shall serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the League (1/2)

@dtolensky and shall be charged with protecting the integrity of the game of professional hockey and preserving public confidence in the league.

Yeah, um, not so much there Gary.

or cunning negotiator to get the ultimate goal. remember he is the one listening to what owners like Jacobs want he is just as at fault but if the goal is the deal they gave and nothing else he is doing his job as the longer this goes the better that deal is and the players wont be unified forever. the billionaires can afford this oh it will hurt but it will kill a large % of the players careers and eventually the union. the owners to me are 100% at fault for all of this. but the players will kill their own union the longer they go

Is that the mark of a cunning negotiator, though?

I don't think it is. Seems more like a Stalinist agenda by ruling with an iron fist... i.e. - 'You take our deal, there is no alternative.'

A cunning negotiator would have coerced his opposite into some agreement by this point. Thereby saving the league face, and getting the players back onto the ice.

Instead, they're all losing money, and day by day alienating more fans from their game.

yah i dont think there is any cunningness about Bettman ... he's just trying to drop the hammer on the union

Fehr on the other hand is at a huge position of weakness after the last lockout when the union agreed to a salary cap

i heard Friedman say yesterday that if the season gets cancelled at some point, Fehr will play his trump card and take a salary cap off the table on a new deal ... so we could be looking at a 2 year lockout

cunning??? idk

a move that would kill the NHL? probably

exactly. they came to the table to split a very large pie. that's just a matter of math.

this fucktard in his astounding greed (and ego) has not only diminished that pie significantly for this season, but in all likelyhood for years to come. I have been a fan since I was 5 years old... at this point I will still watch, but I can't imagine ever spending another dollar on NHL product. companies that were NHL sponsors (tires, food, beer, etc) used to get preferential looks from me... not anymore.

I'm the one who matters, god dammit. Not one player from the first game I ever saw is still in the NHL. I'm still here.

:thumb: this: A real farkin' shame that the owners & the NHLPA can't understand this.

Cancel this season, and if next years even looks to be threatened start researching the possibility of replacement players.

Hell; if this goes into next season, how about a replacement league?

Serious question, do you think a rival North American league is even capable of coming into it's own in this day and age? Even if there were a dozen or so super wealthy individuals that wanted to start up a league would enough players be willing to go for it? Are there contractual/legal reasons why teams couldn't use arenas? Is it even a possibility?

WHA part deux?!? Anything's possible I guess, but I think you would likely have to start small (say a 10-12 team league) and likely this new league wouldn't be paying players the salaries they're currently commanding in the NHL.

I'd definitely say it's a possibility.

So the NHL wants to take a 2 week break from negotiating. Not even just 1, let's take 2. Makes sense. What's the rush?....WTF?!

Edit: Ian White doesn't mince words...

Red Wings D Ian White on Gary Bettman: "I personally think he's an idiot"

And these are the types of reactions that the NHL is counting on...Well played Bettman.

180+ locked out NHLers now in Europe, their 2012-13 NHL salaries total $520+m. Flyers lead the way with 11 in Europe

I think the NHLPA should make a move to a decertification of the union . If they went about their business with decertification as their main play, this would allow them to force the federal gov't to get involved if the decertified union filed anti-trust suits.

I think it is important to point out that both the NFLPA and NBAPA made this same play just last season. Both leagues eventually came to new agreements with their subsequent PA's.

This move would incite a very harsh reaction from the NHL and Bettman. But, at this point, who cares? They don't seem to me to be negotiating in good faith to begin with. Might as well drop the gloves and start dropping haymakers.

If the PA moves to decertify, they could bring a very powerful third party into the negotiations... The Fed.

The PA has said they think they will get the best deal in December. The league has said call us in December.
