i wouldn't hate it. essentially replace a downie-type (assuming raffl replaces him on the 3rd line) with a shootout specialist. roll a PK specialist, energy guy, and shootout specialist as your 4th line. i like it.

i REALLY wouldn't hate it if it was boyes. little bit of a stretch to call him 'just' a shootout specialist considering he's scored 70 points in a season before. even if he has had a bunch of down seasons since then.

That "shootout specialist" better be a solid player in all other areas of the game otherwise I don't want him - if you focus on winning the game in 60-65 minutes, you don't have to worry about shootouts

As awaz mentioned, Brad Boyes is pretty solid in shootouts and he's not a bad player to have on a team

Boyes would be ideal IMO. He's a decent player all around and he would definitely bring in a good shoot-out guy but maybe more importantly more of the "veteran leadership" everyone seems to be so enamored by. I still don't even understand that term guys start slowing down and experiencing more problems later in their career do to the accumulation of punishment they've taken. If I was a GM I wouldn't sign anyone over 34 for more then one year ever, but that also has to do with the dumb ass 35+ contracts and not having a way out for career ending injuries like in Pronger's case. I agree the Flyers should have to pay his salary since he was an employee of the team and was injured preforming his job but it's asinine that there isn't a group of neutral doctors who can proclaim he's unable to ever play again and then have the cap hit absolved as long as the team continues to pay his contract. It could even be worked out that the NHL and player's union could discuss whether or not the player would be eligible (if the player chose to) to fill a staff role on the team already paying him at no added salary as long as it did not impact their treatments or personal life. For example maybe Pronger could watch tape with the coaches and players to add input but due to his post concussion syndrome he wouldn't be able to be used as a scout who is expected to travel. Sorry off topic again...

problem is with the rules as they currently are teams like the Blues just play for the shootout when they are tied late in the game. i don't think it is a Flyers problem as much as it is a NHL problem. they need to figure out how to make these teams want to win it in regulation and/or OT.

This is why I believe ties are better. Less 3 point games and less complicated when it comes to too breakers. Plus it would actually encourage teams to try to score and win which is what the NHL actually wants.

it should just be a 3-2-1 system. 3 for winning a hockey game, 2 for a skills competition, 1 for losing a skills competition.

i hate ties though. can't get mad, or happy about them. they just suck.

What would you think about 2 points for a win, 1 point for a shootout win, no points for a loss either way? I guess it would really just have the exact same effect as what you suggested, with fewer total points.

I agree about ties, it's not a clean feeling at the end of the game - somebody has to win

Yep, that works too. I think what we all agree on is that shootout wins should not count as much as hockey wins.
