I know somebody already did a joke about it, but my first thought after digesting the news was, ah, so THAT'S where Cooke is serving his suspension.

I guess it doesn't matter. The grizzly pic turns up if you do a google search. Came across it by complete accident the other day.

Whoa. So my brother is in the army and I've always joked that he must be a spy. Because he was sent to an academy to learn Mandarin and he's really vague about what he does when we ask him questions.

A couple of weeks ago he was sent to Germany for a "training exercise" and I kept pestering him about they'd be sending him to Germany when his specialty was China. He, like usual, just deflected my questions.

Anyways, I just heard from my mom that his "training exercise" was cut short and he's on his way back home now.

This whole Germany story is all a cover! I bet you my little fucking brother was in Abbottabad I betcha!

question for you guys ... has your opinion of Barrack Obama changed ? I kept hearing opinions like "well hes taking all the credit for this operation" and I agree that it all seemed very opportunistic to me

but then Im watching frontline last night and they kept talking about "drone wars" and how he has ok'ed 5 times as many covert drone attacks than dubbya did ... basically shoot first and ask questions later ... caught me off guard ... pretty bad ass imo

My opinion of him when I voted for him was "another scumbag politician who I happen to agree with slightly more than John McCain". He's been a little more Hawkish than I expected, but I think he just wants to get these wars over with. Overall he is what I expected him to be. I never bought into the hype.

speaking as a cdn who just went to a ballot box monday, I dont think the variety of choices matters when it comes to quality of politicians

I just didnt realize this Hawkish edge existed in him

I think the fact that he is more hawkish than people believed is because of the information he now has. It is easy to have these grand ideas of peace when you don't really know what's going on behind the scenes. I've always believed that all president's are going to make pretty much the same decisions when it comes to foreign affairs, because when presented with all of the information, there are limited options, and they all tend to choose similarly. Case-in-point: Gitmo. He gets in office and realizes that it may be a little more necessary than he thought.

I wasn't implying that more choices would make things better...in fact, a two-party system is the most effective way to go...but it's just that the two parties are so entrenched in their ideologies (which aside from the extreme ends of the political spectrum, are not much different from each other), that common sense legislation loses out and not much productive gets done (or poison pills get inserted in otherwise potentially good legislation).

but dont you think this entrenchment of ideology wouldnt happen if there were competing parties with new ideas that challenge the status quo?

ie in Canada on Monday we basically saw the obliteration of the Liberal party because people saw a different option in a 3rd party during the campaign (dont get me wrong I personally didnt see it as a different option - lol)

I keep hearing how he is taking all the credit for the operation but every time I have heard him speak of it he seems to spread the credit around. He was lucky the intelligence came through when he was in office.

I also do not see how some people are insisting that Bush get credit for the killing. It was probably just bad luck they never found him when he was in office, so I do not blame him but I do not see how he gets credit for something he never did two plus years out of office.

When Obama insists that he made finding Bin Laden a priority again one can look at this Bush quote and might see his point:

"I don't know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care. It's not that important. It's not our priority."
- G.W. Bush, 3/13/02

Overall my thought on Obama have not changed since the election. He is a politician. I wont go as far as saying I feel he is doing a good job, I will say I feel he is often trying to do the right thing and I do not not always (or often) feel that way from politicians.

What I failed to mention was the financial entrenchment as well. There are competing parties in the US (libertarians, constitutional, greens), but they can't make any significant dents in the landscape until true campaign finance reform is made. The two parties in power aren't going to draft real campaign finance reform because it would shoot themselves in the foot as the parties in control.

Since this is pretty close to discussing politics (which is a :nono:) I'll limit my answer to one word:

No.
