The primary goal of expanding the playoffs was clearly to generate more revenue. However, another stated reason was to ensure that the best teams wouldn’t miss out on a chance at the championship due to a single bad loss during the season, or being punished for playing a tougher SOS.

Now, with two teams in the championship game that wouldn’t have even made it under the old four-team playoff system, do you think they achieved that goal? Or has it instead diminished the importance of regular season games?

They may not have made it under the 4-team set up, but they have proven that they are the two best teams. So, the 4-team set up would not have had the two best teams which theoretically it was set up to do.

In addition, the four teams that would have made it under the old system did make it under the new. And then proceeded to prove they were not the best teams.

More revenue - check
More post season interest - check
More good games - check
More important regular season games - check
More inclusion of non-traditional teams - check

I can't think of a single goal that it didn't achieve. The only people complaining (like the screenshot in OP) are SEC stans mad that their monopoly has been busted.

I'm hoping to make it even better they go to 16 teams. No byes can be done in same time as the 12 teamer. Home games in round 1 don't even need to add any bowls to the mix. also with no byes the seeding will make more sense.

Almost too easy a switch.

You guys are talking about SEC stans but we're going to see 3 loss SEC teams in playoffs in the future because the playoffs are so long

I think I would stick with 12 and eliminate the free byes for conference champs. Although more home playoff games would be awesome.

I don't watch it regardless, but a bye seems odd for college, and seems to have hurt the teams that had them, which all lost.

Hard to say if the byes hurt.

The FEI advanced rankings had Ohio St #1, Oregon #2, and Notre Dame #3. By efficiency rankings, the national championship game is chalk. The seedings are wack because regular seasons are small sample sizes.

I don't get why he's saying the two biggest upsets of the season are now completely meaningless. They still happened, they were still huge upsets.

Ask Vanderbilt if their upset of Bama would have been less meaningful if Bama had made the playoffs...I'll bet they would still take the win

I think he was saying they were meaningless in light of past seasons. Those losses would have ended their seasons in the 4 team playoff era.

I don’t agree with him, but those losses didn’t cost them anything but maybe a first round bye (which appears that it is not helpful with such a long layover between the season and the playoffs). So that’s why I think he says they are meaningless. They still have great meaning to the team that won.

That’s what should matter, but fans will always bitch and that’s why there’s no solution to this matter.
But, those teams were irrelevant this season. They couldn’t even play the role of spoiler.

I think so, I like how it gives more teams a chance, and the semifinals delivered great games. However it should not expand more, we would start having even more blowouts and undeserving teams, and it would water down the regular season. I also think that the best 4 teams should get the byes, not the best 4 conference champions.

The only team that got a bye, who looked like they deserved a bye, was Arizona State, and before the games were played they were probably thought the least deserving of one.

I get what you say about the blowouts, I can imagine most years that the 1-16 game is not going to be close, and probably the next three matchups as well.
