By the way Giants fans. timestamp this one...even if Harrison turns into a Wheeler level guy I'm all in on this deal, Posey made a great move here.

Felt the same and still do on Beltran for Wheeler

I get some of the logic behind the trade, but I think the timing of it is rather nonsensical (deadline is 6-7 weeks away, Sox are 37-36, they're down Bregman) and I just don't think some of the return is a good fit. I do like the Sox freeing up money and I do think they're better off ridding themselves of it in the future, but there's always going to be the matter of what they do with that money. And while I think they're vastly improving their roster flexibility and payroll by moving him, I do think this trade hurts from a 2025 perspective.

I do like us getting Harrison out of the trade, but I just don't think Tibbs is a logical fit unless the Sox plan on using him or someone else as a trade chip. I don't hate him as a prospect either, he was a 1st rounder and he has a 132 wRC+ despite the meh BA with good K/BB rates... the Sox just have a bunch of outfielders already with Anthony/Duran/Rafaela/Abreu/Campbell/Refsnyder. Jose Bello has great K/BB rates, but he's 20 now and he hasn't even pitched in A ball

It might also just be the shock of the trade and the familiar feeling of the Nomar/Betts trades, but at least one of those trades worked out for the Sox. Hopefully it works out like the Nomar trade, but I'm feeling pretty skeptical right now. I hope you enjoy Devers at least, he is a fun hitter to watch. I will miss him killing the Yanks and making Cole his bitch
Nice post, only comment is I think the Sox are probably not feeling it this year, and this trade is evidence

I certainly hope Devers delivers a touch more than Beltran

And now you have another, and a legit SP with upside, and money to spend.

I get thinking bad trade for you but it's not as bad as you are making it out (same with Luka trade)
The Luka trade was stupid bad. It don’t really matter about the players, they could have had so many 1st rounders if they actually tried and talked to other teams

Of course but the trade was the exact right play he just didn't perform great, he was ok, even above average for us in that short time...920 OPS and 159 OPS+ but only 167 at bats

A big part of this was the Giants taking on all of the salary, so the players didn't have to be as good, similar to Dallas not wanting to pay Luka a supermax. Red Sox can turn around and get another FA with that money,
Harry is a potential ace and Tibbs is just outside the top 100 (though, now that he is in the Boston system, he will be ranked #60 or so).

It's a win still, yes they gave up some talent from surplus and took on a big salary, they had to give to get

I am getting more “OK” as the shock of it wears thin, but I still think the talent cost to take on that contract is a huge risk. But Devers is probably the best hitter we have had since Bonds, so that is exciting.

If you think about it, if Adames performed like we expected this trade probably wouldn’t have happened. Battling for first place with what we have is insane, but we needed to make some kind of move.

I’m hoping this lights a fire under everyone and they all perform like what they are worth.

It's just money, we keep being mad the Dodgers spend so much, ok let's f'ing go

Got a legit bat at age 28, who saw that as a possibility? Cost is just money and surplus arms, and a maybe bat trapped positionally behind a 'no doubt' one

Good trade, A grade

It's a definite vote from the team management saying they think these guys can compete with help so here it is

I am a OK with this trade. We kept Bryce and Birdy. I love Harry and hope he does well in Boston, but this trade has W all over it imhumbleo.

Yes although we are battling for first place, the Giants can see it isn’t enough to win it all. Like I said hopefully everyone wakes up. There is no doubt we are a better team now.

If Devers is gonna man third until Chap gets back we need mighty Casey to get at bats, so either 2nd or DH. Or Devers can just keep being the DH.

If you have top level pitching (we do) you always have a shot to win it all. They were never favored in any of their title years. Get there with great pitching and enough hitting and you're as good a chance as any. This move is a big step towards enough hitting.

This is a win now move that is also works longer term he's only 28. As @tzill basically said, we just brought in a legit big time all star bat every bit we pray Bryce will be in maybe 5 years...uh, we're gonna complain? This is the ONLY way to get a legit masher, trade or grow one, no FAs available.

What are we even talking about here lol

No reason whatsoever to have Devers at 3rd and Chasey at DH. If both are in the lineup, that means Chasey at 3rd and Devers at DH or Devers at 3rd and Chasey at 1st.

Big difference I see between this trade and the Beltran/Wheeler trade was that Beltran was a half season rental. Devers will be hear for possibly 8 years. If he can continue hitting well for the next 3 years, it would likely be a win for the Giants no matter how Harrison turns out. And yes, I said that about a Giants' prospect. However, it will hurt if Devers gets too entitled and stops hitting at the same level. I don't think that will happen but it could happen and that would sting in the future (unless Harrison flops).

Yeah, the prospect cost AND the taking on of the full salary feels steep. Guess Posey felt it was worth the get. We will see. He will be good but not sure what the long term will look like. As I said earlier, if we get at least 3 more prime Devers' offensive years, it will likely be worth it even if Harrison turns out to be a stud.
