I guess we can look at it this way: The Tigers farm system needs depth everywhere. Infield is as good a place to start as any.

Interesting comment on the Tigers pregame a moment ago. The last Tiger infielder that the team DRAFTED who went to an All-Star game is .... Travis Fryman.

Welcome back to the Big Leagues, Matt Boyd. 4 hits, a hit batter, and 3 runs in the first.

What a turd.

Not overwhelmed with this trade. I don't mind getting infield help, especially a good 3b but sounds like they aren't overly great, 4th, 15th and ? Other than Lugo, any idea what position these guys are? Please don't tell me 1b...

Avila, you are not impressing thus far.

Local Ohio radio says Lugo was their #2.

Correa is out two months. Send em Iggy and JWilly for Tucker. That'd be sweet.

The Tigers have acquired INF's Dawel Lugo, Sergio Alcantara & Jose King from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for OF J.D. Martinez.

Not overly happy with the trade ... no top 100 prospects
Avila is hot garbage. You could have atleast gotten a low end top 100 prospect for him. We have a trash GM.

I still can't believe the hot garbage they got for JD. I bet he sells Wilson for peanuts as well. Fulmer for one low top 100 prospect. What a goddamn joke.

Lugo was signed by the Blue Jays as a 16-year old for $1.3 million, so someone definitely saw a future for him in the big leagues. He hit .311 with 17 homers in 488 AB between High-A and Double-A last season, and is said to be a good defensive 3B as well. He's dropped off some this season in AA, hitting .282 with 7 homers in 341 AB.

The other two are both middle infielders, currently playing SS. Alcantara is said to be fast and is a switch-hitter, but not hitting for much yet. Jose King is only 18, and even Al Avila described him as "high risk/high reward".

Good info, thanks. I really thought we would get more for JD, but to be honest, I think signing to him a long term deal at $25 mil per (or thereabouts) would've been a mistake. He gets injured way too often and is not good in the OF. I love the kid, great story, but you gotta take emotion out of the equation.

Concerning trade....Yankees gave up only one top 100 prospect (#36 -Baseball America) to get Frazier, Robertson and Kahnle. Plus they took on a good amount of cash in salary for these free agents. Tigers at least got AZ to take all of the remaining salary owed to JD (around $5mil). Teams with impending free agents don't have the advantage of getting a first round pick any more so their leverage in deadline trades is diminished. Avila may have been better of holding out for more....but we don't know what other teams had been offering.
It will be interesting to see if other teams get Top 100 prospects in return for their free agents to be.

JD Martinez hit on hand with pitch....left game. Was 0-2, with two strikeouts when taken out.

My biggest issue with the trader is that you have two other contending teams with much better farm systems in dire need of a Corner OF bat now. You could have been patient and swinged for something bigger in return. The Diamondbacks is one of the few teams that had a worse farm system that ours. For reference, Lugo was #4 in their top 30 prospect list and is only #11 in ours. I would hope if they had pulled the trigger now, it was for something much more worthwhile.

I can't second-guess a trade when I don't know what other teams have offered up to this point. Waiting is always a gamble....and I don't get the feeling Avila is a gambler. All I can say is that I think he could have pushed AZ for a couple of better players beyond Lugo. Time will tell if teams are going to give up Top 100 prospects for rental players.

I agree with you, but to be honest, I think the market was limited. Trading to Cleveland requires a premium, last thing you want is to face JD 30 games a year for the next 5-6 years.

I'm not impressed with the return, but I gotta see what else happens before I hang Avila.

Im just glad they moved him.

Tigers have purged infield talent from their system for years.

This deal helps the other way going forward. Lugo's complete lack of
Drawing walls stands out to me.

This article that was linked over on the ALC board sums up the deal pretty well. Not a good market for rental corner outfielders. (1) Way more sellers than buyers, (2) a few of the buyers are either way ahead in first place and/or don't need outfielders.

That's why a lot of people thought Wilson would get a better return than JD. Of course, Wilson then goes out and blows a save!!!

LOL, yeah. Not a very good "audition" for J-Dubs.
