There you go...2017 salary obligations. You'll need 8 more guys. Assume after arbitration and picking up the two options, team salary is $202 million. Do you take aim at the Yankees and Dodgers and the $230-250 plateau? It's not your money....but consider you already have 4 guys signed for 2019 for over $100,000,000 total. This winter, do you try and sign Chapman as your closer? Weiters as a veteran catcher? Jay Bruce as a quality 4th outfielder? Or just roll the dice with pickups like Lowe and Pelfrey that you will overpay for little return? OF COURSE, Detroit could non-tender the two Wilsons and save some cash - but not much. Trade Iglesias and bring up Dixon Machado? (Vice?). Don't pick up KRod and Maybin options? Another $15mil saved....but you have to replace them....

BTW....the top 4 highest salaries belong to the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox and Tigers. NONE of them are in first place in their divisions.

Looks like Ausmus will intentionally pass over Fulmer in the rotation once a month, to keep his innings down and try to get him into late September with the total still under 160.

He's the only player I really want to see win. Jimmy Rollins also. Be awesome to see a couple guys that no MLB team wants start in the AS Game. (Fans shouldn't get to vote in a game that matters.)

Avila will wait for a proper time to eat Lowe's $11 million contract....maybe try and bury it under some other news. Maybe over ASG break or at the same time as a big trade at the end of the month.
Avila needs to be replaced. I know people will say Illitch is just as much as fault, and that might be true. But Avila will be the fall guy, with Lowe, Upton, and Pelfrey looking pretty poor on Avila's performance review. The only thing that saves his butt is a Wild Card spot. And....IMO, I'd still look to replace him.
