Detroit Tigers Ongoing 2016 Thread

Correct me if I am wrong....but the 4th and 5th starter do not matter to a team, correct? At least they don't in Miami AND in SF, as I recall. Now, I forget? Was it because no one knows who they are/were....or because they can go 2-10 and have no effect on the team because your 1,2,3 starters are so good. It was all a little confusing....probably something more commonly found in Mexican Leagues.

DETROIT -- No surprise here, but tonight's series finale between the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees has been postponed.

Nasty conditions hit southeast Michigan early Sunday, beginning as snow and since falling as rain with temperatures approaching freezing.
The Tigers welcome in the Pittsburgh Pirates at 1:05 p.m. Monday for a two-game series. Today's starter, Justin Verlander, will start then, pushing back Shane Greene's first start to Wednesday at Pittsburgh.

JV's day is over and thanks to fine relief pitching from "Toledo Drew" VerHagen, Verlander's ERA is 8.71.

Anibal Sanchez makes his second start of the season after the Tigers dropped their second straight game Monday, losing 7-4 to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He earned the win in his first start, allowing two runs on four hits in five innings pitched Wednesday at Miami. J.D. Martinez and Jose Iglesias carry five-game hitting streaks into Tuesday's game. Martinez was 2-for-3 with a home run Monday, while Iglesias went 1-for-3 with a single.

So, despite the two losses, perhaps we can take solace in the fact that the Tiger bullpen has allowed only 2 runs over the last 12 innings (both by Buck Farmer). Of course, if the starters continue this streak of short outings, that could change in a hurry.

I'm aware of the inherited runs. VerHagen had zero blemishes so far this season before Monday's appearance.

Good observation, and I'm hoping it's just an April thing. If Verlander is alternately up-and-down all season, the Tigers have little shot at a postseason berth. They need him to be mostly good.

Interesting stat: In JV's 4.1 innings, Pirates hitters fouled off 20 pitches after reaching two strikes in the count. Appears that JV is lacking a legitimate swing-and-miss pitch so far this season.
