This division could suck now after the White Sox Sale trade.

With the White Sox trading Sale and talking about sending Todd Frazier to the Dodgers, it looks like Chicago will go to rebuild mode. With the Twins already in that mode, if the Royals decide to get rid of Wade and Cain and re-load themselves....????

Perhaps this is Avila's way out of making any trades? Just stick with what he has and Detroit has a real good shot at second place, again! Verlander, Fulmer, Norris, sore-armed Zimmermann and any bozo who MIGHT go 5 innings as the rotation. Trade JD Martinez for two mediocre relief pitchers (only one of which will be on the opening day roster). Try and convince fans that Tyler Collins, Steven Moya, and JaCoby Jones are the team's future....and away we go for 2017. 84-78, second place, maybe only 4-5 games behind. Butts in the seats....Happy Days.

It makes less sense now the Tigers trading Marin. ...
Two years in a row Avila has jumped the gate.

Wastes money on Pelfrey and saves very little(something like 5-6% of the payroll.)ridding the team of Maybin.

rather see DD sell away the future.

(He got such a head start this time. Really has climbed the ladder on status of franchise as his career progresses.)

Dombrowski is really something. Trade three of Bostons top eight prospects to get Sale. Trades another one of their top 8 to get Thornburg from Mil. Another year or two of that (and maybe signing Harper to a $400mil contract) and he will have finished his work in Boston and can move on to LA or NY.

Now that my head has stopped spinning from all the deals Avila has pulled off so far at the Winter Meetings.....I think the Tigers are set for 2017.
1. I have to consider that One-Two Punch of re-signing Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Mike Aviles, to reinforce the bench, moves of a genius.
2. Declaring Anthony Gose as the teams opening day CF (to avoid a lawsuit) was a brilliant move.
3. Deciding - in December - to keep the bullpen intact and selecting Mark Lowe as the setup man also showed guts.
4. But the most heart-warming move was to name his son AA Jr. to the position of bullpen catcher which will allow him to continue catching while wearing his new concussion-proof mask....

Well, they interviewed Al Avila on TV a day or two ago .... don't know if he's being pre-emptive or what, but he was asked specifically about trading JD Martinez and he said, in a nutshell, that the hot trade chips right now are players who still have 3, 4, 5 years of team control left. A guy like JD, even though he's a legit middle-of-the-order bat, is not getting many sniffs because he's an FA at the end of 2017. He concluded, "there's a good chance that on opening day, JD Martinez will be in right field for the Tigers."

The Tigers claimed lefty pitcher Daniel Stumpf from the Phillies in the Rule 5 draft. Stumpf was picked last year in the Rule 5 draft but appeared in only a small handful of games (10.80 ERA) before he was hit with an 80 game suspension for PED.
There is no truth that the Tigers have set him up in a workout program with JaCoby Jones.

Signing Lil Al to just over the Vet minimum seems like an obvious thing for Big Al to do.

TIGERS RE-STOCK TOLEDO
Tigers Sign Omar Infante, 13 Others To Minors Deals

Bringing back Omar Infante, huh? Why not sign Austin Jackson, get Avila Jr from the White Sox and see if the Cardinals would part with Jhonny (I don't think he plays full time anymore). Bring back the 2013 team! They won over 90 games. I'm sure Andy Dirks is around somewhere. Last I heard, Jose Valverde was a male dancer in a central Phoenix nightclub. Get those guys together, put Leyland on the bench and, Bob's your uncle, 90 wins!!!!

It's a joke that Avila was resigned.

Tigers sign Alex Avila.....why? Still haven't figured out why they got rid of Maybin...

Maybin seemed to be a very important part of the team. There doesn't seem to be anyone to replace him, just a never was pitcher who will spend time in the minors.

The Angels just signed Ben Revere, who will serve as their 4th outfielder, for $4mil plus $2mil in incentives. Might have been a good signing by the Tigers.

What is interesting is that Revere will get most of his playing time platooning with Maybin in LF. With Trout in CF and Calhoun in RF, Revere appears set to be Maybin's partner in LF. If Revere (a left handed batter) does well, he may take away considerable ABs from Maybin. I wonder if the Angels are worried about Maybin's injury history and felt they needed an experienced fall-back player?

There are three free agents still available that have CF experience, although 2 of them probably belong in LF. Austin Jackson and Michael Bourn have been CFers...but time and lack of arm strength make them better better LF candidates. But...I think they could still outplay the mutts the Tigers want to put in center. Jackson would be cheap....missed half of 2016 with injury. Bourn can still demand in the $5-6mil range (maybe more if he gets lucky) after a decent 2016 season. There is also Peter Bourjos. A much better fielder but has never been a big offensive threat....but he'd come cheap. With the lack of defense in the outfield, he might be a good pickup if they could get him for $2mil or less. I'd rather see him out in CF than Romine.

Just a salary dump with Maybin, albeit only about $9 million. It does seem strange, considering with other contracts the Tigers have, $9 mill is chump change. Maybin definitely energized the lineup when he played, and the Tigers' winning percentage with him in the lineup was much better than without him. The fact that he played only 92 games figured into the Tiger brass' decision, I'm sure.

Avila will probably only catch about 45 games. McCann figures to still get the bulk of the work.

God help us if we have to go into 2017 with a platoon of Romine and Collins in CF.
